I am WAY into the this thread. Starred and flagged. Okay here goes...

Thera-Grendelle

or

Ere-Ben-Gremmendelle

You know...something very Lord of the Rings-ish would be very appropriate...

Little known fact: All of the planets, except for Earth, were named after Greek and Roman gods and godesses. The name Earth is an English/German name which simply means the ground. It comes from the Old English words 'eor(th)e' and 'ertha'. In German it is 'erde'. The name Earth is at least 1000 years old.

How about Home?

Did it occur to you that other alien life has a name for our planet.

We made the language we speak today, How the hell are they gonna understand our body language, speech and even recognision we have?

I think a cool name would be:

BingeDrinkias

Because it will be complicated to use things without name.

Imagine saying this without using any names.

Looking up into the night sky, there were several UFO ships flying low altitude. I remember the color red for some reason. Millions upon millions of circular shaped objects were "fired" out of these ships in streams, appearing much like water coming out of a garden hose.

It would become something like this:

Looking up into the XXXXXX XXXXXX, there were several XXXXXX XXXXXX flying low altitude. I remember the color XXXXXX for some reason. Millions upon millions of XXXXXX shaped objects were "fired" out of these XXXXXX in XXXXXX, appearing much like XXXXXX coming out of a XXXXXX XXXXXX.

It would make for an interesting read.

PS: I don't know if you recognised the text.

Hmm, changing the name?

Why not call is something short and sweet, an easy name to remember and spell. How about..

Yes, Terra, that is the real name, those pesky English speaking persons think that the names they use are the real ones.

What a fitting name for our planet. Even George Bush would agree that we are all teraists.

The name is Terra for Portuguese speaking people.

If the English speakers want to call it by a different name it's OK by me, I will keep on calling it Terra.

PS: terra, without capital letter, is also what we call the soil.

You can all learn Portuguese and say that we are "terrestres", the Portuguese name for the inhabitants of Terra.

You do realise that the name of this planet isn't "Earth", but "Tellus"?

I'm amazed at the fact that not a single reply stated this fact.

on a semi serious note, i was always led to believe that while we all call this planet Earth, a better name would be Terra. or Gaia

The Sun 's real name is Sol (hence where the term solar system came from), so we might also be referred to as Solaris Prime, or if you want to get really technical, Solaris 3

Just out of curiosity, who came up with the name "Earth" anyhow? And does our sun have an actual name?
