It's funny, you know: I was just thinking this morning that we need a registry of ATS translators and interpreters -- for the reasons already mentioned. Online auto-translators are frankly not always very reliable, and are pretty useless if we have video or just audio in another language.

Now down to brass tacks.
I can translate and interpret Czech to English, and have a good working knowledge of Slovak. (While they are similar, they are in fact separate languages; "Czechoslovak" is not a language and never has been!) So, please feel free to add me to the list. Czech as my "main" one, Slovak if we don't have anyone better qualified available. I could also communicate by phone/online systems with Czech-speaking people and provide interpreting services if required.

Another important factor is that we definitely have members whose knowledge of English is very limited, but who might have something important to share with our community. This could even relate to events they have witnessed or information/documents/diaries etc they possess that are not readily available on the Web.

I also feel that this need for tanslators and interpreters exists throughout the more crucial parts of ATS, and not only within the aliens/ufos forum boards. For that reason I'd suggest a clickable icon or notice on the main page. If we had a "click on a flag" feature on the main page somewhere, when (for example) a Chinese speaker clicked on it, s/he would be taken to a special thread that would have all our translators' flags listed (again), with a message in the appropriate language along the lines of:

If you have some important information for us here on ATS, please contact the following ATS member/translator.

This kind of communication could even be added in to the beginning of this thread. Admin can modify an old post, after all.

In the case of a new member who does not have the required 20 posts for U2U's, perhaps Admin could set up a means for these communications to take place. It would be very unfortunate if new members did not pass on what they know because they didn't feel able to post possibly complex details in English and had no way to let us know otherwise. True, they can write to a mod if they have less than 20 posts, but many may not know that.

I guess it could be done by having a special "Post in Your Own Language/Contact Translator" thread, which would allow members to do just that. It would need to include instructions (with the flags) so they could do their post and also send a U2U to the appropriate translator. That might get a bit messy but it's just an idea.

If you agree with my thoughts, it might be worth communicating with ATS admin to see what can be done. As far as I know, no other major conspiracy site in the world offers a service where members can assist with so many languages. And who knows? At some future point, this could be a crucial factor in getting information out to our mainly English-speaking members.

I also agree that members who are offering their services as translators/interpreters should be identified by having something below their names. eg:
ATS Translator/Interpreter:
Spanish & Portuguese

Anyway, I'll leave it with you.

Best regards,

Mike

We are aware of automatic translators, thank you though:
this is not what this thread is about.
What we need is an ACTUAL knowledge of a language, a list of members who speak a language, and available to make actual translations when needed;
if we need to know something about some news, then we CANNOT base a serious research to an automatic translator.

I can do Italian, maybe French, but sorry, my Russian is very limited...

I can translate from German and Greek into English and vice versa. I am Greek, but I grew up in Germany and have a German high school education and some University, which I completed in Athens, Greece. Also, I am a retired translator and have done lots of translations from those languages on various subject matters. So, if you need anything translated from Greek or German, let me know.

The main problem is with the Chinese language. I tried the automatic translation
with some of their sites and it turned out a full nonsence. I would like someone
here at least to review the state and the conclusions of the Chinese ufology.

Great. This thread is a very useful resource.

Many thanks for taking the time to create and maintain it.

*In order to get dropped from the list you should avoid logging into ATS for a substantial amount of time or simply post your desire to be removed from the list.

I could not help noticing that some of those listed in the latest version of the Registry have not been logged in to ATS in a rather long period - in some cases, over a year or even two. Given the helpful format you have adopted, including clearly stating the last login date, it probably does not matter but perhaps the list could be pruned a little?

All the best,

Isaac

I could possibly do Mandarin Chinese -> English. Native English speaker, competent in Chinese (I use it at work).

Important note on Chinese: while written Chinese is going to be the same across the country, or close enough for our purposes, there are many different dialects of spoken Chinese, and these are for the most part not mutually intelligible. The "dialects" are generally no closer to one another than, say, French and Italian. I can only really understand standard Mandarin (普通话 putonghua "common speech" in China/国语 guoyu "national language" in Taiwan).

Please send me U2U translation of the following news broadcast in Hebrew: www.youtube.com...

The listed registered Hebrew translator, ZeroKnowledge's last login was in the month of October 2010, this is very unproductive in terms of gains in research and investigation. Please contact me if you have information where I may obtain a timely translation of the link provided.

The only reason its lists last login from long ago is because it was posted during that week. You should actually try an U2U the person listed, as my last login show is november 2010, but I have definetly not left these boards. Until the site admins can streamline an automated process for this, we gotta kind of wait for scramjet to have free time out of their day and re-post. It really is a time consuming task.

You can use the Babblefish website to translate websites automatically

I use at least five different sites (one of the Babelfish) to do my translations, and none of those give an accurate translation. I have seen at least two cases in which the automatic translation changed the meaning of the whole sentence, making the translation useless.

Until we get perfect translators (and I don't see that happening soon) we will always need a human translator to check the automatic translations.

Well ArMap your a mod, talk to the admins man and try to make this even better. Maybe they can make it into an automated form that people can voluntarily add, and then the site uses a script to post the actual last login date of the translator. Maybe anyone more than six months out could be automatically removed you know?

Any programmer out there want to give that a shot and then pitch it to the admins?

Just wanted to say thanks. To everyone. This thread is one of the best ideas I've seen on ATS.

I almost think they should build this into the avatar system in place now.

Have a:

"Languages Spoken" tag that gets verified by some method.

Great idea, thanks again S+F................
