Has the Internet created more bad than good?

What are the pros and cons of the internet?
Here are some of mine:

Pros:
Email
Researching
Music downloads
News articles
ATS

Cons:

Chatrooms (disgusting)
Pornography
Child abductions over the internet


Also, cant the government track what you are doing over the net?

I think its 50/50. Its done alot of good and alot of bad.

Haha But seriously I think an invention that can bring the globe together in peace is a beautiful thing, just look at what the internet has doen for Democratic movements in China, Iran, ___ insert backward country here, its a beautiful invention.

Everything has pros and cons, it is not because of internet the cons have come to being, just increased because of the internet.

I think Internet is more good than bad, because without internet there would be no ATS, not only that the intenet is a vast ocean of info on all subjects.

Internet can be used in both and bad ways depending on the person, and I think it is used more in good ways.

The internet is just like any other tool- there is no inherent good or bad to it. There is no bad or good in a hammer, or a knife, or a midget. Well, mayeb the midget, but it mostly comes from teh way these objects are used. A hammer can build a house or crush a skull. A knife can cut the fat from beef or bring death and pain and mild discomfort lodged in somebody. A midget can sit quietly by hismelf or be used by a larger person as a living club of sorts.

It's like the NRA says: Guns don't kill people, people kill people. It's all in how you use the tools your given.


And yes, I'm pefectly aware of just how bizzare I am.

Actually the Government can and does track what were doing over the Internet. It's just as easy to monitor Internet activities (correct me if I'm wrong please ) as it is to monitor phone calls. The good things of the Internet far supercedes the bad. I use the Internet for many hours a day, and I find it to be the most important thing that I have ever used in my life. I can just about do anything on the Net. Plus, the fact that I don't have to send a peice of mail, or make a phone call everytime I wan't to make an inquiry on something. Now, there are some bad things inherent to the Internet...some of the more obvious reasons would be things like Pornograpy, or Hackers, Viruses, but like any bad thing you can put an end to it. The Internet is a wonderful tool(yes I bold that because I want to emphasize that fact that people don't always utilize the Internet to it's full capacity), and a large archive of information.

maybe, but i think know its great...people can communicate with other people where ever they are in the world!

Yes there are people out there who abuse it, but people are coming up with ideas to stop it...so i say no its great!

The Internet is good in my opinion. Without it there would be no online gaming, and online gaming rules.

The internet has turned most average Joe's PC into a fantastic plastic porn machine. 15 years ago no one would believe you if you said everyone with internet access would have unlimited free porno. Aside from that, being able to chat with folks from all over the world is pretty amazing.

Deep down I wish there was more cool free stuff on the internet besides porno, or there was a seperate "channel" where only legitimate research and information was posted. I think the biggest weakness of the internet is all the false and misleading info on here. Deny Ignorance!

just like everything i would say the internet has its ups and downs. information is very available to people that years ago would be imposible to come by, and that can be good info for good purposes or the exact opposite. the internet has opened up a whole new world for people. you can date, shop, and work all from your room. i think thats also one of the bigger problems. i thin a lot of people dont know what the world looks like any more, exept for the pictures they have seen on the internet.
i would have to say i disagree with a few of your pros and cons. child abductions happen all the time, not just neciseraly over the internet. im sure people have had pen pal abductions before but that dosent stop people from writing mails.
there is nothing wrong with chatrooms. i have had quite a few good conversations with people in chat rooms, you just have to fond the right ones. in a way forums are like chatrooms without the spaming. o wait that still happens exept youll get banned,
porno, well thats diff strokes for diff folks. if you dont want your children looking at it block it. there are programs that do this.

now for your pros you put music dl. do you pay for it? most people dont which would make you a criminal. i dont pay for it, and im certainly not going to buy a cd for one good song. im a criminal. people are going to jail for this. in a sense that would make it a con. but if you pay for it i guess its good.
you could go back and forth forever about a topic like this. its just up to the individual to use his or hers better judgement.

Im all for the positive image it has subscribed concerning porn.

If people want to see those vast volumes of porn, they can do as they like in my opinion. If you don't like it, it's pretty easy not to get in contact with.

If I want good information, I usually try searching through Scirus or through Google with the 'site:edu' addition at the end of the search terms. That usually filters out a lot of the crap.

I believe that the internet has created more good for the people than it has bad. It is a great resource to access all types of information on almost every imaginable subject. It is the meeting place of millions of minds that have the ability to communicate instantaneously without the need for travelling long distances.

The internet has been one of the best communication tools ever conceived.

Not even a question here. Definately a good thing.

Remember when you had to go to a library or class to learn anything. If you see learning as bad then you might not like the internet.

Yes, there's allot more information to deal with & many problems that go with it.

Automobiles, Airplanes & Telephones just to name a few world changing inventions that brought mostly good with a little bad.

Some people don't like change & they try to pretend their not affected - especially religious groups, but eventually it changes your world around you even if you refuse to use them..

Like stated before, the inernet is a tool, and a useful one. We don't have to take the media's word for anything, e-mail someone you know in the area and you'll find out what's happening. That being said has anyone heard from Medic lately, or am I just missing his posts?

the government can track you without the net via: cell phone, credit card, costco card, safeway club card, checks,
cable tv,your phone,medical records......
I can go on and on about ways they can track you.

the point is most of what happens on the net happend long before it even existed just makes the good and bad more convinient.
the net is just wires and chips the fault lays in the poeple and the choices they make with their own free will.
