Strange vapour trails

I'm a long time lurker, thought it was time to post. Our local newspaper's website has an interesting photo of some odd vapour trails seen in the sky of Northern Scotland.

Some places have crop circles, but Stronsay has sky circles! Sheena Cooper wondered if anyone could shed any light on who the mysterious pilot was who created these circles in the sky over the island.

Personally I'm guessing an E3 Recon plane doing a search pattern, but who knows. What is interesting is that our local extremely conservative newspaper deemed it newsworthy.

i would have to say in my opinion it looks like military exercises,
or a holding patten.
