Some theorize that it was an engine of a spacecraft going critical, some say an airburst asteroid. A weapons test? So many theories, so little time. What do you think?
Side note" I believe on Easter Island, there is a shallow obsidian (Hardened molten rock) trench, followed by a crater. There is no obsidian elsewhere on the island.

For the time being, there's only enough evidence to suggest that a meteor entered our atmosphere, heated up due to air friction and basically exploded. (Don't consider meteors solid balls of rock btw).

Researchers took samples from trees in the area and found rock in the trees dated to the time of the incident.

People can claim it was an E.T. craft that went critical or that "they saved up and blew up an asteroid" but in all reality, there isn't enough significant evidence to support those theories.

perhaps the meteor was pock-marked and permeated with little tunnels and mini caverns. As the friction from entry heated the rock up, the air may have expanded, until BOOM!
