Credit card fees: Some gas stations say 'no more'

He may be the first in West Virginia to ban plastic, but gas station operators nationwide are reporting similar woes as higher prices translate into higher credit card fees the managers must pay, squeezing profits at the pump.

This might become a HUGE issue if this practice goes nationwide. Even in good times there are a lot of people who take advantage of that couple day lag between using a credit card or your debit card as a credit card at the pump and it processing through your bank. For people living paycheck to paycheck, you even know which stations in your area take the longest to process so if you find yourself with just a little cash 3 or 4 days before payday you can still feul up to go to work or whatnot. That doesn't even take into consideration people who have several rotating cards to help get them through normal times, let alone rough spots in their monthly expenditure cycle. If this becomes the norm for stations to refuse the plastic, I'd expect to see a dramatic increase in reports of people not being able to get to work because they can't scrounge up the hard cash needed to buy gas every week. I also can foresee the stations soon refusing to accept checks as well, as many will 'float' a check so they can still get their gas and that will result in more costs to the station when those checks bounce.
