I don't have a link yet as i'm writing this, but this has just been reported on the news.

Apparently it had a magnitude scale of 7.0.

There seems alot of earth quakes recently, or is this all normal?

Here is a link, showing all the earth quakes so far this week, see all the 7.0 and above quakes, just in the last week, quite a lot no?

earthquake.usgs.gov...

Edit to add updated news link.

TOKYO: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck northern Japan Saturday, the meteorological agency said.

The earthquake hit in Iwate prefecture, some 500 kilometres (300 miles) north of Tokyo, and rattled buildings in the capital.

Television footage showed buildings also shaking in northern cities of Japan. Bullet trains were automatically shut down as a precaution.

The quake had a depth of 10 kilometres (six miles), the agency said.

There was no immediate word on potential damage or casualties, and the agency did not issue a tsunami warning.

A new earthquake warning system kicked in for the quake, with public broadcaster NHK flashing an alert moments before it struck.

Japan endures some 20 percent of the world's powerful earthquakes. It has built an infrastructure intended to withstand tremors.

No reports of damage so far,

The quake hit 2 miles underground,

Bullet trains have stopped running in that area... And they say its Northan Japan,

Though i would say Japan are quiet used to that size, and they have had much larger with very little damage,

Hopefully all will be fine, No Tsunami warning as of yet,

I guess it was 6.4. It happened half a mile nw of Sakanazawa, Akita-ken. Depth was 40 km.

IRIS said 6.9 too. Actually the global activity is not very intense at the moment. The only strange thing is that we still have quakes in China on daily basis .Also today one in Poland, not the area where you would expect an earthquake.. however , still nothing out of ordinary

Just heard on the news that they think another one is coming,

They have just issued an advanced warning.

there is a thread where someone predicted this, but i think he said it would be a 9.1.... i shall have to try and dig it up..

terrible news, i cant see how anyone can say this is all normal activity... its too frequent...

here's the link, but its predicted for china not japan... so probably not of any relavance.

I know some posters say all this activity is nothing unusual and that this is not even the most intense part, but i cant be the only person that thinks there has been a sharp increase across the world, and in places where earth quakes are very rare.

Unusual Earthquake Swarm Off Oregon Coast Puzzles Scientists

Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center have recorded more than 600 earthquakes in the last 10 days off the central Oregon coast in an area not typically known for a high degree of seismic activity.

www.sciencedaily.com...

Here's a video showing the placement of what seems a record number of earthquakes for 2008, this is just a small sample, and we are only just half way through the year..

Here's some more information which points to the fact that there has been an increase in earthquakes.

DATES FROM & TO PERIOD NO. EARTHQUAKES (Mag. > 6.99)

1863 to 1900 incl 38 yrs 12
1901 to 1938 incl 38 yrs 53
1939 to 1976 incl 38 yrs 71
1977 to 2014 incl * 38 yrs 128 (to May 2008) predict >180 in total.

The last part being an indication, going beyond 2008.

Source.

I realize that while we are having alot of earthquakes, that in it self relieves some of the energy, making it less likely of a big one happening.

So i ask again, is this all normal?

Found this article, probably not connected, but i find it strange that nuclear waste is being dumped in fault lines, this article relates to the UK, but im sure other countries have done the same.

Could the dumping of nuclear waste in fault lines be increasing the number of quakes around the world?

Remember the big quake in China, wasnt there a detection of radioactivity in areas affected, is China dumping its waste in its faults lines too??

Mr Benn told Sky News: "We set up an independent committee which looked at all the options, and the best thing to go for is storing the nuclear waste underground in a geological fault.

Source.

And a comment at the end of the article im about to post, says another country, the US is doing the same.

There was a project some years ago that some west coast americans could get rid of waste, sewage and other undesirable materials by pumping it into fault lines along the san andreas system, this actually caused earthquakes.

Does anyone know of this project described above?

Simple Really. Years ago, NASA started trying to "manage" the weather. I would use the world "control" myself. They have an off the books project, aimed at improving weather conditions to ensure launch & recovery of shuttle missions. Simple delays are very costly; it was quite innocent and easy to justify. However, the NSA being who they are, decided the following: Hey let's take all this proven research and these sound weather control procedures " The Rocket Scientist " came up with and turn them into a handy, dandy "tool". I would call it a "weapon". We can then manage (I would say "manipulate") the economies of any country that hurts us in any way. Say another country like "China", just as an example, starts buying up major interest in American Banks, American Property or American Companies. Adding strength to their economy & hurting ours. Simple, whip up some nasty weather.. an earthquake, a little flooding, maybe a tornado or two and presto... Their economy takes a nose dive. In return, we pledge aid (making us look like caring people to the rest of the World), and we send in a large military contractor (I would say "merc spys for hire - usually owned by politicans) to help clean up... (determine their military strength, public utilities layout, public transit/retreat capabilites..etc.). Man what a great tool (I mean weapon). Need a natural disaster, just get on the secure sat link to the space station, move a few satelites and presto... Mother Natures' putting it on them..... They have no one to blame, after all... Bad Weather & Nature Disasters Happen. Right.

Why all the recent earthquakes (and while we're at it lets include all other natural disasters that have claimed so many lives recently)?

Personally, I like to believe mother nature is finally fighting back, at war with humanity, and is out to kick all our collective asses for this rampant rape and pollution of Earth, and for all the use and abuse of what humans call livestock/food, and for all the terrorism and extinction humans are inflecting upon all of Earths other citizen occupants ~ the wildlife.

For our crimes against nature, I hope she, mother nature, succeeds in kicking humanity hard and something awful, and evicts at least 90% of humanity from planet Earth ~ and soon!

Yup, that's what I like to believe. And, I see no reason why it couldn't and shouldn't be true. Humanity deserves to have their collective kind punished for their callous wanton destruction of Earth and decimation of so many wildlife species.

Rah, Rah, Rah, Go Mother Nature, Kick Humanity Where It Will Hurt Them The Most!

As posted above regarding dumping of nuclear waste in fault lines, doesnt that sound a stupid idea?
Yes its very deep and temporarily does hide the problem, but what about when an earthquake does happen, if there is nuclear waste, wouldnt it just come back to the surface, and cause extra problems on top of the actual earth quake?

Here's more proof that dumping waste, let alone nuclear waste, causes more earthquakes.

The most famous episode of a human-induced earthquake began in 1961, when a 12,000-foot disposal well was drilled in the U.S. Army's Rocky Mountain Arsenal northeast of Denver. The well was used for disposing of waste fluids from arsenal operations, and injection commenced in March 1962.

Shortly thereafter an unusual series of earthquakes erupted in the area, and by the end of December 1962 about 190 earthquakes had occurred. None caused damage until December, when several structures were damaged in Dupont and Irondale.

Over 1,300 earthquakes were recorded between January 1963 and August 1967. In April 1967 the largest earthquake since the series began in 1962 occurred, and damage was recorded in the arsenal, Derby and Boulder. This tremor measured 5.0 on the Richter scale.

Even after the Rocky Mountain Arsenal waste dumping practice stopped, earthquakes continued to be felt in the Denver area, so in 1968 the Army began removing fluid from the arsenal well very slowly in an effort to reduce the earthquake activity.
