Obama's Defense Plan Leaves Us Vulnerable

Obama declared the real enemy to America is not North Korea, Moscow, Beijing, Tehran or bin Laden. According to Obama, the U.S. military is the evil that must be destroyed

“I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending. I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems. I will not weaponize space. I will slow our development of future combat systems,” stated Obama.

Ironically, the only way to prove such a defense in combat is to have someone shoot missiles at the U.S. homeland. Of course, without a missile defense, we will be helpless at any such onslaught.

Still, the USS Lake Erie just racked up another in a long series of successful intercepts, proving the U.S. Navy anti-missile systems not only work but work well in simulated combat situations. The Lake Erie scored two direct hits against two missiles fired and destroyed another missile from a moving launch vehicle.

Obama feels that such a defense is unnecessary. Meanwhile, both North Korea and Iran are quickly progressing toward missiles capable of reaching America, Moscow is deploying its latest lethal ICBM, the Topol-M, and China is investing in massive missiles capable of reaching the U.S. homeland.

The last test, performed by the Iranians, proved their missiles could reach Western Europe. The next Iranian test will orbit a small satellite, with the possibility of global reach.

Then there is Obama’s commitment to cut defense in space, pledging to not “weaponize” space. This pledge comes long after the cow has left the barn, or in this case, after China has shot down an orbiting satellite.

The Chinese anti-satellite test sprayed hundreds of thousands of pieces of debris into near orbit, adding to the dangers of space travel. The Chinese test also proved that the PRC has already weaponized space, thus any pledge by Obama to not take defensive measures is just a way of leaving the communists in the high ground, threatening our satellites with instant destruction - Charles R. Smith of Newsmax

In addition, Obama’s pledge to slow weapon systems is just as short-sighted as the rest of his declarations. The fact is that slowing weapons deployment raises their costs astronomically — not to mention the fact that we may already need these new weapons.

President Obama will let the U.S. missiles rot while Moscow deploys a new generation of Topol-M monsters and China deploys its Dong Feng 31 series. In addition, President Obama will remove any chance of defense by canceling the National Missile Defense which could save millions of lives otherwise snuffed out in the blinding flash of nuclear hell-fire.

Was that Obama speaking or Clinton? Sounded a lot like what he said years ago, when he downsized our military.

Oh and whoever wrote that article can take the word "president obama off" he's not the president yet!

Good point, and Clinton said the same thing, but after the Cold War (which was still bad).

Obama is stating this while Iran, China and a renewed Russia are on the rise!!

He is trying to do what Clinton got alot of praise for (though at the expense of major long-term National Security damages) that we are only starting to see now with China's "peaceful rise".

We spend more on defense than the entire EU combined. You don't think it would be possible to trim the budget for defense and still not make ourselves vulnerable? We spend an absurd amount on defense right now.

Do you not feel that some of that money could possibly be put to use better in other areas?

Of course the money could be better used in other areas Karl. So could a alot of Earmarks by favors of Senators' to companies that end up producing absolutely nothing for millions of dollars in Contracts (per company). They just fund some big salaries (really big salaries).

The point here, is what Obama wants to cut. We need to be in the drivers seat, not only for deturrant purposes, but for protection.

It's what Obama wants to cut, the most important elements in terms of rogue missle protection and direct threats to the US mainland (by ICBMs etc.). Not to menton satellites which are the whole basis for Communications and Command and Control (C4 real-time battlefield operations) and Laser guided missles.

What's more, China is starting to lead the US in key areas of strategic warfare such as Space based Weapondry and Information Warfare.

Space based weapondry and defense is composed of defending and knocking out Satellites pivitol to military communications, launch codes, laser guidance etc.

China's spending on military is grossly under-reported by the PRC as to not draw attention while building up massively. More correct estimates for China's military spending is now nearly 200 billion per year and going up fast.

It's about money. Not defense. No country is going to attack the United States. Period. They ALL know that we have the capabilities, TODAY, to glass-over any country on the planet even IF they were successful in hitting the US with nukes. Even a part of our 'boomer' submarine fleet could end any country out there. All this other stuff is the military-industrial-complex picking the country's pocket. We've wasted trillions on poorly managed programs, fraud and unnecessary, fraudulent wars. A small number of people reap huge profits while the country is robbed blind. Wake-up people. Money and greed, money and greed. It has NOTHING to do with defense. If it did, why aren't countries without all this stuff and without the massive defense spending getting invaded/attacked??

The United States has not been attacked on our own soil since the War of 1812. 9/11 was a terrorist attack - not a military action.

What's leaving this country vulnerable is billions (possibly trillions) of dollars wasted in useless spending in Iraq that's reduced the amount of support we have from our Western allies, garnered more hatred from our enemies, and pushed up the cost of the commodities the military needs (i.e. fuel, weapons technology).

Like jtma508 said, no country is going to openly declare war against the United States. Nuclear weapons held the threat of mutually assured destruction during the Cold War and they hold that same power today.

The defense weapons platform Ronald Reagan put into play is outdated and needs serious reevaluation. I do not know if Obama would do just that, but I'm assuming he would look at it far more than attempting Imperalism like Bush has done.

You need to do some serious research Evan.

Mutually Assured Destruction as a deturrant no longer exists.

Space-based Weapondry (which China is working very hard on) is designed to knock out Satellites. These Satellites, if knocked out, render the military blind. ICBMs don't get launched for retalitory strikes without Satellites.

Also, one Nuclear weapon detinated 300 miles above in US airspace results in an Electromagnetic Shockwave that would fry all electronics from Coast to Coast.

Before 2000, many countries did not have ICBMs that reached the US, now they do, thanks in larger part to Democrats (Bill Clinton). The whole dam world is becoming armed to the Teeth. With all these ICBMs (new ones now by China and Russia), is just a matter of time before they start to fly and the shyte hits the fan.

NK now has a three-stage ICBM capable of reaching the US. These can be sold to Terrorists (and probably have) for use with Mobile Launchers. Terrorists are hard to pinpoint to a country, they are faceless.

Also, you should know, that China is the leading big spender on military in terms of GDP. China spends 30% of its total income on the military. The US is less than that for the US GDP towards the military.

The US is a Trillion$ economy, China is now just recently also a Trillion$ economy, spending nearly 200 Billion$ per year on the military developement and assets.

China only reports it is spending 60 Billion$ per year on the military, but this is grossly underreported (as cited by the Pentagon as well) and that China is spending 3 times that. The reason for under-reporting is to not draw attention to the massive military build-up. China also does not want the US further arming Taiwan.

This just means the Chinese will have to spend more of their own money to develop weapons instead of relying on stealing from the US.

Theoretically, if the US cut all defence research spending then China would have to spend a whole lot more of they're own money. Then the US could just steal from China, the money saved could be spent on the health system or on space exploration.
