Why was this computer built to test american nuclear weapons, is it testing possible scenario's for nuclear war? and why would it require 1,000 trillion calculations per second to perform nuclear tests..

I don't know whats more scary ..

The fact that its built to test a weapon of horror, or the fact that we may just have built Skynet.. wait until one of these things is looking after the nuclear nursery.

To put the computer's speed in perspective, it has roughly the computing power of 100,000 of today's most powerful laptops stacked 1.5 miles high,

Yes, but... Can it run Vista? Does it meet the minimum requirements?

heh... sorry, had to throw that in... vista is inefficient regardless of what machine it's on.

There will always be a new "worlds fastest" computer. And like every predecessor, it will be replaced very soon by yet another worlds fastest.

No matter how advanced they get... they will still be incapable of opening text files as fast as DOS did on a 486.
Funny how that works eh?

A quick look for "petaflop barrier" in the ATS search yields these threads:

Japanese Supercomputer breaks Petaflop Barrier (9/1/06)
www.engadget.com... breaks-the-petaflop-barrier/

and the thread I started last night,

New Military Supercomputer Breaks Performance Record (6/10/08 @ 12:19 AM)

To put the processing power in perspective, Thomas P. D’Agostino of the National Nuclear Security Administration said that if all 6 billion people on Earth entered calculations on a calculator for 24 hours a day, seven days per week it would take 46 years to do what Roadrunner can do in one day.

Here's some other threads I always like to throw in:

DARPA's iXo Artificial Intelligence Control Grid: 'The Official Version'
An Inconvenient Truth ON Al Gore: The Google A.I. Conspiracy

When I see something like this I always wonder....

How fast are the computers that aren't being announced. NSA is supposed to be the keepers of world's largest and fastest computers. Los Alamos is a keeper of large scientific computers for their work.

A guy just wonders, what really has been developed but not reported.

These computers are going to be the backend of "the cloud". Jobs and Gates spoke of this a year or two ago. Your desktop computer will be a thing of the past in the not so distant future. Both Microsoft and Apple have been working hand in hand for years. I know this is IBMs best bet but they are involved in this process as well. Anyway Apple and MS are developing two types of screens. So the future of computing is going to be a screen and an input device. Desktop computers will drop off the scene. You will no longer need to own a computer.

The internet will host everything such as cable does with In Demand interfaces. Think of Apple TV. And with the iphone it just proves that mobile computing is on the horizon. This is very much becoming a reality with internet based apps as well. You don't even have to have software anymore. This is just the beginning.

With the insane speed of Internet 2 and these new high end computers the new reality of computing is around the corner. Sure you can bet they handle molecular data and quantam physics but I truly believe just a few of these tanks will control our nations entire network needs.

So long hackers and pedophiles.

Definitely need to make a one of these super computers for gaming, sick of having my fps lag out when im ready for a headshot... prolly get the real monster kills running a comp like that, lol

Heres a dumb question but whats the big deal about really fast computers Ok so they will make for better video games
No really I hear everyone say there are no limits. Does this mean we can make space ships and by using DNA making robotic humans fill me in on some examples of what the point is of these super fast computers.

DEVICES capable of reproducing themselves came one step closer to reality this week as a 3D printer - assembled from parts made by an identical 3D printer - went on display at the Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK. The replica can in turn print the parts needed to build another copy, and so on.

Machine makes machine in it's own image!

well as awesome as technology is,

technology will be, is the end of humanity we are becoming so Dependant on it that some kids cant last a few hours without their msn, icq etc, its good and bad if not used properly

Almost every new technology using cpu can take advantage of it.

Basically it's good to EVOLVE computers to a level you can't imagine.

I somehow don't entirely believe this. IBM failed to produce a chip fast enough for Apple back in the G4 and G5 days only 2 years ago and Apple dropped out of contract with them. They simply couldn't build a fast enough processor. Apple ended up going with intel whose chip runs laps backwards around the IBM chip without breaking a sweat.

I smell something fishy.

Who cares, they do this every year.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Unless they already had the technology but felt like giving the public the run-around...The way I see it is if this computer exists- obviously we're being shorthanded on technology. While our computers are "powerful" to us, they don't stand a chance against machines that could do the work of 6 billion people. Technology is without a doubt being withheld from the public..every year we get alittle more but nothing significant enough as this. Just because its a super computer, doesn't mean a virus or error cannot occur though.

This is really the synthesis of the mind to come, our computer programming in our bodies will be running a lot faster.

Interesting, let me know how this will change the way we surf for porn on the web. How soon before virtual sex is available? That is what the internet is all about, right? Porn porn porn, and some other stuff. Figured I'd bring up the topic since there seems to be an endless supply of it on the web.

I believe that we humans are capable of ,more than we can think in the present. I also believe that as a result of R&D, when the prosessing speed matches the speed of human thought, artifical intelligence will be attained. Perhaps in this life time. The computers will tell us so!
