What? Your comment makes no sense to me.

As far as 'advanced' and 'alien', perhaps you're being too constrained in just what those terms can mean?

Think in terms of 'paradigm shift', as in data processing with pencil and paper and then the advent of computers. Prior to the invention of the microprocessor and computers we could not comprehend comments made about technology that is (now) only 200-300 years in the future.

And that's the future of a -known- terrestrial species, not a completely alien one.

We are several paradigm shifts away from 'getting into space', and several more away from being able to travel throughout the solar system without the use of gravity assist and chemical or ionic rockets. We're not even close to being space faring.

About the closest we can come to 'understanding' advanced tech is that we can make a pretty good assumption that aliens would need to use computers to assist them.

But if you remember back to Dune they were able to fold space using pure biologics.

One one hand you seem to want to solve things by adding layers of complexity, then on the other, you are greatly underestimating just what 'alien' might mean.

"Non-disclosure" contracts are not actually failsafe. I work with the elderly and some years ago cared for a person who had had the very highest security classification in the U.S. Twenty two levels above the President (and people actually think George Bush is in charge). This person's main field of work had been in designing missiles, however once he was sent for an interview to back engineer a downed U.F.O. in Canada. He was disappointed not to be chosen for the job and stated that his biggest disappointment in life was not to have ever sighted a U.F.O.

I've been in the missle silo owned by Ed Dames--before he bought it. 10 or 11 stories straight down. Metal ladders, no lights, no elevator. Built in the 50's? Of course this is New Mexico. Lots of strange stuff underground I would bet.

Let me start off by apologizing for replying anonymously; most contributors post under their own usernames, but I come here so rarely that I won't bother getting a username for the time being.

We have an IDEA of what aliens (if such creatures actually exist) and their craft are made of; however these are nothing more than ideas. We have no tangible knowledge of alien biology, technology or culture. We have witness accounts and alledged video footage of aliens being dissected.

To return to the 17th-century scholar, he would be able to study human anatomy by dissecting cadavers, which would be easily available. Let us now imagine that, instead of a laptop, John Travolta lands his vintage Qantas 707 in a field just outside the town in which the scholar lives. John, being the excellent communicator that he is, would explain to the scholar the technical details of the 707 and give the scholar a tour of the flight deck as well as a walk-around the aircraft. He would open up the jets, the cargo hold and even treat the scholar to a nice refreshing cocktail in the galley. However, John Travolta would have to overcome the scholar's initial fears, explain aerodynamics, manufacturing technology, material science, communication technology, fueling and so much else. This is assuming that John has all the necessary knowledge and is able to explain it in sufficient detail. If the 707 were piloted by a trained astronaut who came with all the necessary teaching documentation on all the above subjects, there would still be the issue of context. Everything would be written assuming the reader has a basic knowledge of the premises of modern society and technology. Even basic concepts, such as electrical current would be unknown to the scholar. There would have to be a very, very steep learning curve - and a lot of time.

To return to the situation with the aliens, the premises of alien society would be much more foreign to us. There would be no common language, and even if there were, is it probable that aliens would come with a whole library for us to learn how to build and operate one of their craft? We also have to remember that what we see, hear and experience in general is basically projected on our cultural, technological, social and human developmental premises. In essence, we see what we are able to see and understand it to the best of our capacity as 21st-century humans. The very fact that we assume alien spacecraft to be constructed of materials and piloted by alien crews from their corner of the universe to ours in itself reveals our limitations.

Dune is excellent in the way it departs from the conventional spaceship-through-space concept. If anything, it would be more likely that the spacecraft we see are put their for us to see and talk about in order for us to think and believe what we are expected to think and believe, be it by aliens or by members of our own race.

Our exploration of space will really take off once we learn to live with each other in peace and release ourselves from the physical restrictions of our human existence.

My impression was the mid-sixties. The interview for the job was in the U.S., New York seems to ring a bell.
You may also be interested to know that he also told of projects he worked on with Soviet scientists sent from the USSR during the so-called Cold War. He named names, but they meant nothing to me.

My u2u was rejected as I haven't submitted the requisite number of posts so I'll give you a short reply here. I know no more than the crash had occurred in Canada. The joint projects were not elaborated on, but I guess it was to do with missile technology. I am unable to recall the Soviet names. I think Edward Teller may have had some association. Director or something similar.

The same force controlled both sides during the Cold War and WW2 and more.I had a relative by the name of Sir Marc Oliphant who was working at his lab in Cambridge, just prior to joining the Manhattan Project, when he had a device for the upcoming project pilfered from his lab by Lord Victor Rothschild during a "friendly" visit. This device was reverse engineered overnight and the results handed onto the Soviets. The following day Rothschild returned it admonishing Marc for his lax security! Rothschild controlled British Intelligence for decades.

In general, people have little conception of the problems involved in reverse-engineering a device or a propulsion system, and that's just for a terrestrial design.

For anything that's even mildly advanced and is from a non-terrestrial source, to be of value we'd need a lot more than the final device.

Even technology merely 10e4 years in advance of ours might be nearly impossible to understand, let alone disassemble safely and engineer.

Having the final device or technology or a crashed (even if still functional) propulsion system is only marginally helpful in a majority of cases. For instance what good would a microchip do if we hadn't already mastered the electromagnetic energy spectrum? The majority of the time just trying to disassemble a technology will destroy it, and highly advanced technology (such as a nuclear reactor) might not be abe to be disassembled by a more primitive species.

What's more important to have and understand are the Production Methods, not the final device.

Yes! Finally, somebody who really understands actual reality of engineering.

Let's cut down to the crux of the issue: "warp drive".

Warp drive, in physics, means "additional source terms in Einstein equations not described by the current stress-energy tensor with big-G coupling."

So far, in open physics world, we have absolutely 0.0% evidence for this; I wish it were not so. But GR has been validated in extreme circumstances now (pulsar gravitational radiation) and soon results from Gravity-Probe B will be out. Eotovos-type experiments (equivalence principle tests with varying nuclear characteristics) all were null. GR stands tall, all alternatives have fallen. We see gravitational lensing of galaxies, all described fine by GR. Where's the other term? With nuclear energy, we at least had the clear prior anomaly of radioactivity.

Now if such a thing were true, how much effort and brains would it take to get some engineering utility out of it? It would be tremendous. Look at the size of the Manhattan project---a very large fraction of the free world's best scientists were on it. Look at the infrastructure necessary to develop the all the materials and ancillary efforts. I don't see anything that big for warp drive.

We'd really need fully open results---and then we might make progress, over 20 years.

The second issue is "power source". Where does the energy to create this exotic source term and propulsion come from? What is dissipated? What about thermodynamics? Even solving the "warp drive" is very far away from something that can fly, as opposed to an immense laboratory instrument which can create a strange condition of matter for a microsecond.

However, even table-top gravity control could be quite useful for other reason: high frequency (e.g. MHz-GHz) gravitational waves. If the coupling turned out to be easy enough, we could have 'gravity-radio' which we could beam straight through the center of the Earth.

The analogy of a 17th century scientist receiving a 21st century laptop
is an unfair one to make because if we do have alien craft to take apart,
we 21st century people have at least an UNDERSTANDING of the concepts
of time, space, field effects, quantum mechanics, nano-technologies,
multi-dimensional physics, etc.

We can at least conceive and wrap ourselves around the fact that our
universe is probably multi-dimensional in nature and that there are high
probabilities of the existence on multi-force/Zero Point Energy propulsion
physics and technologies that are Faster Than Light.

A 17th century person has NO CONCEPT AT ALL of any of this!

Which 17th century person exactly?

Let's take the smartest one of all: Isaac Newton.

He would have plenty to learn, but there is no doubt whatsoever that Sir Isaac would quickly be able to function at the very highest levels of physics within 3-4 years.

Newton was already then speculating about hidden properties of matter (most things were unknown then unlike today) with multiple theories which then would have been very exotic. Many were wrong, but not for stupid reasons---but for lack of experimental results. Indeed, without some of the preconceptions from 19th century science, he might be able to pick up 20th-21st century science even faster.

However, there is in truth a fundamental difference between 17th century and today.

Then, people could not explain the overwhelming majority of physical observations that they come across in everyday life. Now, scientists can---they are mostly right as opposed to mostly wrong. People have successfully made inferences and predictions about quite remote and extreme things---physics about the centers of galaxies for example---based on current knowledge of physics and properties of matter.

I have to agree with some of the people on here....even if we found something that had the technology to travel the universe, I am going to bet that we would have absolutely no clue how to do anything to fix it, and would more than likely destroy it trying to figure it out....if they even could recognize what they had.

What makes everyone think that a "UFO" would even look like anything that we can comprehend? We are so far away from that technology, it would not be like giving Newton a laptop, it would be like giving a caveman the controls to the new particle accelerator at CERN, and expect him to be able to analyze the data, take it apart, and build a new one, without anyones help.

You can say that we may understand the concepts of space time and multiple dimensions, and yadda yadda, but the truth is, we dont know jack.

Lets put it like this....I am going to assume that some of us are aware of nuclear power and whatnot....so does that mean that you would be able to build your own reactor?

This series should provide some insight into the theory of traversing the universe. Its based on observance of how the galaxies are formed. Harnessing this theory, UFOs are probably able to move many times the speed of light.

my psychology lecturer at university told me this effect is called the 'boggle factor'. Most people can accept only so much before they reject it as bogus, for everyone who reads this site please keep posting.

1)The description of the shrink space in front, expand behind is word for word from a tv show on discovery channel called "the technology of star trek.

2) The idea of inside being smaller than outside is straight from Dr Who tv show.
