Boeing is teamed with Lockheed Martin, Pratt & Whitney and the U.S. Air Force to develop the F/A-22 Raptor as a replacement for the F-15. The fast,
agile, stealthy F/A-22 will take over the air superiority role with Air Combat Command starting in 2005. The Air Force plans to procure 339 F/A-22s,
and production is scheduled to run through 2013.
Are you kidding me? There is no such thing, i mean why go up about 24 letters up the alphabet? might as well come up with a new fighter designation,
plus x??? The YF-22 is not an X project aircraft, not black enough, plus it is the first of its kind in generation, so ya no X.
The X-44 MANTA is a converted delta-winged F-22 which uses vectored thrust as its sole means of control. The plan is to convert an F-22 so that it
uses its thrust vectoring nozzles for its flight control, without rudders, stabilitors, or ailerons. MANTA could be used to validate the planform for
the FB-22. MANTA flights could begin by 2006.
