You should read the book "The Day After Tomorrow" by Art Bell. Wonderfully researched and the basis for the movie of the same name. The movie was
"just a movie" but the book gives the meat. The theory is that the earth warms, causing the poles to melt, dumping mega tons of fresh water into the
oceans and disrupting the currents (this is a very condensed version, so read the book for the full deal). Once the tipping point is reached, you
guessed it - ICE AGE. Can this truly happen? If we consider the earths past, another ice age is a real possibility and maybe just around the corner.
The reality is the earth is actually cooling not warming (long term). The current heating cycle we are in is going to be short lived, IMHO. An ice age
on the other hand could last thousands of years. Of course, this is all speculation, but the theory is as good as any others I have seen.
