Just a note...the winner of Best Animated Film, in his acceptance speech, said the word "tenaciously"...which is interesting because Jack Black of Tenacious D fame was one of the presenters...

I think that is very interesting...

I wanted to apologize for not making it to the debate that I was scheduled for. I had a HDD crash on Wednesday night and it took 2 days for a new one from DELL to be shipped.

I am bummed that I missed out but I wanted to say good luck to everyone and again I am sorry I held up the debate. I would have much rather done that then look for all of these damn install keys that I lost...thanks and happy debating....

I was really looking forward to my first post....

Morning all.

Just been browsing the debate forums (nothing much interesting in the general boards).

I feel really sorry for Max. He was putting in the effort and his opponent just threw in the towel.

It was an interesting topic as well : www.abovetopsecret.com...

On that front I have sent a U2U to Maxmars offering to take Doomsday place in the debate providing that Maxmars and the power that be agree to this . Maxmars would go thou to round two as I do not wish to commit to the Tournament.

Cheers xpert11 .

So anyway, I have a question for all.

How do you feel about citations in opening arguments?

The reason I ask is that I'm toying with the notion that any and all external links should be restricted to the main body (three posts each) of the debate and be excluded from opening and closing arguments.

Otherwise, what's the difference (in the case if the rebutter) between a first response and an opening argument?

I move that all external sources be unavailable during the opening and closing remarks.

All those in favor say "Aye".

it depends on the subject to me

sometimes i quote in my opening statement from external source and sometimes i don.t do it.

i know it is about or almost about rethoric but i wouln,t decrease the possible references.

you have to prove some statements, and 5 is ok, sometimes it is a bit too less, but all in all it is ok, more references would lead to over proving.

Point well taken.

But I wonder if the unavailability of external sources, in the opening and closing statements, might get us back to a more structured presentation.

At least save the referenced for the main body of the debate?

After all, what is the restriction on an opening or closing argument if citations are freely available for the linking? In order to distinguish between the opening and closing aguments and the main body of the debate, I think that citations should be restricted.

Not that there can be none, but... some restriction....? Ideas, anybody? Beuller?

My style always omits references and details from the opening and closing statements.

I consider the opening and closing to be the most vital, as the first sets the frame and tone of your argument and the latter is what "leaves the taste in the mouth" of the reader/ judge.

I think thats why I personally prefer to keep the opening and closing statements uncluttered. Rhetoric, rather than logic, is the best for the O & C statements.

But then again, debate is all about personal style. Some manage to get in extra content in their O&C statements which I can't.

I think what I mean to say is that the talent of the debater should begin and end the debater's presentation.

The sources are what they are: secondary to the argument.

Edit to add: SoulSlayer, you have chrystalized my thoughts exactly.
