To tell you the truth, I already had them written before he posted, so I wrote them without knowing his tack.

I then just made a few adjustments, like bbcode insertions and the odd dig to bring the post into context.

I've been thinking about doing this for a while, to avoid the pitfalls of becoming emotionally involved and also to test clairvoyance

That's actually not a bad strategy at all. This tactic allows you to stick to your original line of reasoning, and easily adjust to as needed to smack down your opponent. It's a win-win situation if you think about it.

Yep - after not debating but instead concentrating on reading (because I needed to raise my game) I thought of it as a worthy experiment.

Of course now that the cat is out of the bag it may come back and bite me in the ass

In a recent debate against the Vagabond I had my entire debate written before he posted his first post. Thought I´d try that out for a change. All I had to do then was add rebuttals. It almost worked.

It almost worked - I think you were one zinger away from victory.

I found that the drawback with writing it all out first and then adapting was that it seemed to be a less flexible approach, but in fairness, the good outweighs the bad.
