Oz...that's cool...

Everyone else...the rule is designed to encourage original rhetoric in the debates rather than relying too heavily on other people's works and opinions. In that spirit...if someone goes one link over or two sentences over it will likely be overlooked and forgotten.

Edits and rule nazism are for egregious violations...

If you "Direct Quote" someone elses material, you HAVE to give appropriate credit...

So if I use quotes from Shakespeare as visual aid and interest it counts external content or no? I did not figure it would as long as I kept it with context and reason.

Thanks guys

Semper, how do you define "appropriate credit" though? We may have different ideas of what that means..

I think that Oz was referring to the fact that he stated in his opening that he obtained that which he placed in external tags from wikipedia rather than place a link.

Technically that is fine though I would rather see a link...easier for the judges and completely transparent.

antar: Quotes from Shakespeare count as external sourcing (it's not your original work) but a link is not necessarily needed. I have quoted Napolean Bonaparte, I think, in a past debate and omitted a link...that would be an exception to the external sourcing requiring a link (though if you have the links to use by all means provide a link).

Also how do I count 10,000 words? I use notepad to write and then bring it over to ats for the editing and spell check.

Google "character count free online"...

i studied english at university, which i am able to prove and i guess what counts even more is my activitiy in the debate forum.

if it would be a debating club or literature club i would mention it in my CV.
but on the other hand why not mention the debates i did here.
i could apply for a greater variety of jobs.

how would you handle it? would you mention it? how would you mention it?

i just need your advices.

thanks

i am quoting it, coz it is important to me!

Try it.

It changes your mouse into a capture tool and saves automatically to desktop.

Edit: Control/Shift/3 automatically captures the whole active window.

Introductions

Good day all and many thanks for the opportunity to be a fighter in the new tournament. I appreciate the opportunity to debate in a more structured fashion than is usual in these hallowed halls.

I've been a debater for many years in my offline existence and this is a huge leap into the unknown doing it online. I imagine it will demand a more rigorous approach and will deprive me of the advantage my personal charm normally grants me (ahem.)

I'm really looking forward to this first, though probably brief, adventure and beyond that to future opportunities to hone my thoughts and opinions by the finest way of learning - debate and dialogue!

Welcome my friend.

Debating at ATS is indeed a unique thing. The level of intelligence here is extraordinarily high, and the debaters extremely respectful. It's the kind of dialogue you can't find most places anymore.

Enjoy your stay; and I hope you stick around.

On a more serious note, welcome Supercertari.
I'm sure one of the fighters will make you aware of your pub duties as our newest "member"

Let's not get ahead of ourselves!

That just means you have some help. I think we require at least 2 new bartenders before someone can retire.

In related news, I just posted my closing statement for my challenge match with Ian.

What a fun debate!
