Would anyone be interested in an actual live debate via Skype on Monday evening?

Could you tell us more about the format chissler.
Is it going to be a verbal version/variation of the existing debate format.

I see this as structured.. but much more lenient than our current format.

We would take turns speaking and the moderator of the debate would keep us under our allocated time. We can have a chat window open to let them know when they are running out of time. Simple reminders when we have 1 minute left, 30 seconds, 10 seconds... you get the picture.

We would simply take turns going back and forth on an issue for say approximately 20 minutes.

At that time the moderator could intervene and request a short 60 second closing statement from each and then rap it up.

The topic itself should be open in and of itself.

Something along the lines of...

"Barack Obama is going to make the world a better place"
"Sarah Palin is qualified to be commander in chief"
"The USA needs to pull out of Iraq"

Something that more or less resembles an open-ended question as opposed to a close-ended question. We don't want to restrict ourselves within the debate topic and allow ourselves as much to chew on as possible.

I'm sure after we see a few of these we'll see how to improve them.

But it would be imperative in this format that the participants do not cut one another off. Each participant is allocated a certain amount of time and is entitled to every second of it. If they run over time, the moderator shall intervene and hand it over to the other participant.

I think it could be a lot of fun.

It does sound like fun.
Do you envisage "socratic" questions between the parties?

Sounds a little too intense for me at this point, although it is a good idea. Not my cup of tea.

I like having the socratic questions in it. Keeps us honest and wouldn't allow us to duck key issues. Maybe one Socratic question per turn? In this format we'd be offered more opportunities to speak, so too many questions per turn would dominate the debate.

great idea.

I think your idea could eventually become a new breakthrough concept for ATS-Debates.

Good thinking

(I personally dont have time for another debate right now though)

The more I think about it the more I like it.
The tough part is going to be the judging on the fly so to speak.
I'm not that familiar with Skype, but the thing to do if it were possible, would be to record the debate as a podcast so that judges and other members can listen to it at their own leisure. Is that possible?

Well that's what we would do. We'd do the debate live and simply record it and post it as a podcast file for the judges to review.

I'm in then.

The only thing I ask is to finish my debate with Shock first.
So if anyone else is up for it, please cut to the front.

Hey all...just checking in and seeing what is up. The Skype debate sounds like it could be fun, but since it took a herculean effort for me to allow myself to be a part of the MODcast No.2, I am going to sit a few of them out to see how it goes...

But I would be willing to help in any supporting fashion that is necessary to help get it off the ground...

If you are familiar with the intricacies of skype you could moderate my Audio-Fight with chissler.

We'll be going at it as soon as I'm there done waxing you.
Edit: metaphorically speaking.

Not very familiar, but I am a quick learner...

Careful...I am halfway through my composition of the opening...and you have an uphill battle ahead of you...

All right...I'll take that as my cue to cease the 'allusion' and just let the debate speak for itself...

Actually, I can't wait to see what you have up your sleeve.
I'm sure it will be very "creative."

I think the live debate is an excellent idea. Debate in real time can be very intense. I think ill watch how the first couple live debates go before throwing myself in. I can't wait to see if everyones critical thinking is as good as it is on the boards when the pressure is really on

I was going to get creative...and then I thought I would just be a bit more realistic.
