possible a "Lovenia woodsi" fossil found in north norway

yesterday I went to sea to collect some stones and shells and stuff,and found a weird thing:


(sorry for the blurry pic,I took it with my cells cam)

so I went home and searched for sea urchin and found a similar thing :




A strange looking Australian sea urchin from the Miocene period (40 million years old). This fossil was found in the Beaumaris Formation, in Victoria, and has large pores for defensive spines on the top and bottom of the test. A beautiful fossill. Size 1 1/4" by 1 1/4" (3 cm x 3 cm).

It says that this sea urchin is from Australia, but I found it here in Norway,if its the same thing,how is that possible?

Hi there! It's what we in the trade call a 'sea potato'. You're right, they are echinoderms (i.e. related to seastars, brittlestars, urchins, sea cucumbers and chrinoids) and they are very much alive and well as a class of organisms!

You're right, in so far as they are used as indicator species in stratographic paleontology because they are an old and diverse group that are found almost everywhere. Our american friends would recognise flat versions they call sand dollars. Sea potatoes are very common in the north sea but you'll rarely see a live one since they live in the sediment - hope that helps!
