...the truths are manyfold. It also depends on how you arrive at this Truth. In the UFO arena especially, the Truth is usually what people decide before they have begun looking, and in many cases, without looking at all. This sort of behavior is almost standard with any subject that emotion-based thinkers tend to encounter...Many UFO enthusiasts may be vaguely comfortable with careful speculation, but woe be to anyone who suggests that a reviled skeptic may have a point.

What we seem to have with the UFO subject is a vast data pool of strange occurrences, hundreds of which are well-documented and reported by multiple, reliable witnesses. This should indicate that there is something here worthy of scientific and philosophical scrutiny...

It is reasonably safe to state that there is no reliable proof that UFOs and aliens are coming here from other planets and galaxies, but that doesn’t stop people from believing it. There’s nothing wrong with this, until the sort of person that believes this as Truth begins to irrationally and frevently defend it against those who suggest that the belief is without a factual foundation. The extraterrestrial hypothesis is based on what we expect, not on what has been proven to be true. It is mainly derived from inference and cultural references to aliens. It’s what we’re supposed to think, so it finds easy acceptance, and some UFO researchers continually look for evidence of its veracity...

ARTICLE CONTINUES...

While Ive enjoyed several of your skeptical posts in months passed, you cant deny that there is a social movement called Ufology which includes a huge amount of books, merchandise, psychospiritual phenomena, the ocassional politician or military-employee whistleblowing, thousands of witness-reports of unidentified objects seen in the sky along with a collection of pictures and videos.

In the sense of people taking them seriously, UFOs exist.

In the sense of flying objects that we cant identify, UFOs exist.

In the sense of philosophical & metaphysical exploration, ETs exist.

Let me share with you the underlying presupposition:

That the ET-reality is either

a) being covered-up/not-disclosed

or

b) us not being ready/willing to perceive more expansive realities.

With this basic foundational understanding the idea of refuting, debunking and naysaying become superflous

except for the sake of seperating the scams from more sincere lines of research.

For this type of discernment we do not need the skeptic though, we can see through the nonsense ourselves quite easily.

Most people involved in the ufo-subculture arn't remotely interested in the truth about UFOs

Infact getting to the truth is probably impossible now. The "ufo movement" has decided theyre E.Ts in spaceships the main reason is becuase thats what they want UFOs to be.

yeti: I couldnt agree more.

A major mistake made by the UFO-Community is seperating the phenomenon from social, belief-system, technological, metaphysical, cultural, political, economic factors though.

Rather than researching its relation to all these, most only look at the flying disc itself.

I am not denying that one bit. In fact, the article is not about whether UFOs exist or not, or whether or not intelligences-other-than-human are visiting are planet. It's about whether there is something other, beyond the assumptions we have made about the phenomenon.

You are limiting your options. That is the whole point of the article.

I could imagine UFOs are...

...a psychological phenomenon

...from outer-space/other planets

...from other dimensions

...from the government

...from a secret government

...from a subterranean civilization

...from the future

...from the past

...created by mass-hysteria / mass-belief

...a hoax

...a secret social engineering project

Not limited at all.

Nope, still limited.

The only answer that doesn't limit the option is to accept it may be something beyond what we, and can, imagine.

yes, of course.

Label: "Not known yet".

Is the purpose of your thread to lead to this type of open-mindedness or to "discover" that Ufologists are "idiots" or simply for a nice afternoon chat?

A lot from column A, and a little from columns B and C, with the caveat that ufologists are idiots in the same way we're all idiots.

One thing working against the ET Hypothesis (ETH) is that we've never had a clear association of any non-terrestrial creatures with an actual flying craft.

We also have some stories of creatures and craft, but even those have all been described as grounded craft.
