Given current tech, could we colonize space regardless of cost?

I ask this because we know that the Earth will not last forever. We know that the sun will eventually burn out. We know that the odds are very high that a planet killing meteor will eventually hit the earth again.

So, if that is the case and our existence on this planet is doomed in the long run, when will we be honest with that and start making a concerted effort to colonize space?

Will environmentalism matter when the earth gets KO'd by a meteor?

Will we end up wasting all of our natural resources on useless crap now, thereby making it impossible to achieve when it really is necessary?

Are we waiting because it just isn't possible right now? I assume that is the biggest problem. Or are we just ignoring it because it probably won't happen in our lifetime, so screw it..?
