I did a quick search of the posts and was surprised to find no one has mentioned this Automotive X PRIZE contender.

In short this company will offer later this year (fall 2008) a do it yourself external kit to convert your existing car/truck into a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle, PHEV. for about $3,300 plus shipping...
