Wildlife populations 'plummeting'

Topic started on 15-5-2008 @ 10:53 PM by Tokis Phoenix

"Between a quarter and a third of the world's wildlife has been lost since 1970, according to data compiled by the Zoological Society of London.

Populations of land-based species fell by 25%, marine by 28% and freshwater by 29%, it says.

Humans are wiping out about 1% of all other species every year, and one of the "great extinction episodes" in the Earth's history is under way, it says.

Pollution, farming and urban expansion, over-fishing and hunting are blamed";

I have noticed a loss of wildlife in my country even in my own lifetime- i don't see half as many butterflies, bee's, ladybirds, caterpillar's, moths and other bugs and insects as much as i used to when i was a kid. I have also witnessed less and less deer and hare's around too, while with the river which runs through my hometown i haven't seen a fish in it for years (in comparison to when i was a kid when i would see loads of fish in it), there also doesn't seem as many waterfowl around either as they used to be etc.

IMHO, we seriously need to do more to help save and protect our wildlife and get it back to levels where it can prosper. Personally, i think reducing our human population would be a good start- i would be happy to see child policies (like the ones seen in China) enforced in many countries (particularly the more impoverished ones).
