Chemical Compound Prevents Cancer In Lab

ScienceDaily (May 14, 2008) — While researching new ways to stop the progression of cancer, researchers at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, have discovered a compound that has shown to prevent cancer in the laboratory.

The compound, which still faces several rounds of clinical trials, successfully stopped normal cells from turning into cancer cells and inhibited the ability of tumors to grow and form blood vessels. If successful tests continue, researchers eventually hope to create a daily pill that would be taken as a cancer preventive.

“This compound was effective against the 12 types of cancers that it was tested on,” said Doris Benbrook, Ph.D., principle investigator and researcher at the OU Cancer Institute.

Oh this is good... this is real good.

There have been some very promising studies coming out lately and this is definately one of them.

Cancer preventive...Taken every day. Dream of pharmaceutical companies. Since it is still in vitro ,no assurance it will work in organism, but if it reaches phase 1 - then it should really be monitored closely.

Since tumorous cancers are the result of toxins accumulating in the body, we should probably consider what will happen when the habits that we have that cause cancer in the first place are ignored and some sort of pharmaceutical is given that prevents their formation. I have a fear that simply defeating cancers themselves will lead to worse illness overall in individuals who develop cancer as a result of a cancer-conducive (acidic) diet or habits such as smoking, that lead to toxin accumulation.

I hate to throw a wet blanket on things, but this article does not give us much to be optimistic about.

First, scientists find chemical compounds everyday that have anti-cancer or anti-AIDS property in vitro. Only a tiny pecentage of these compounds are ever found to be safe and effective in treating diseases in people.

Second, there are many different types of cancer. There is a strong likelihood that this compound will not be safe or effective in preventing all or most types of cancer. If this compound does have any therapeutic value, in all likelihood it would only be able to prevent only a handful of cancers.
