Airbus announces 3 month delay with A380

Airbus is estimating that ramp-up snags with the A380 will postpone deliveries by two-and-a-half to three months, which the airframer is attributing to delays in adapting to new serial production techniques.

It follows the disclosure today that Airbus will deliver 12, rather than 13, A380s this year and 21 instead of 25 in 2009.

still not quite as good as they had hoped - but at least they are making them - but still another delay so i must ask (as it says on flight global)

Are airliner development schedules a work of pure fiction ?

In a word, yes.......
But it's not just airliner development. This pervades every aspect of large projects.
Every major development humans undertake seem to run WAY over the proposed budget, and they all seem to run into one delay after another as the cost over runs continue to build.

A few examples would be almost any space mission like the Shuttles and the International Space Station. Most every large dam, bridge, tunnel, highway, and the Large Hadron Collider. Even large buildings and also ships suffer from the lowest bidder underestimating their abilities and the real costs involved in completing a large project.

It's kind of sad that humans don't have a grasp of reality when it comes to starting a project. We just have stars in our eyes and hope in our hearts when we set out on such a large endeavor.

EADS anounced a big profit from Airbus for first quarter 2008. Go Europe!!!

looking at Flight Global this morning illustrates this point very well. Three consecutive headlines feature these delays, firstly the A380's new delivery schedule, which at least is not a further delay to deliveries starting, more about Airbus 'facing reality' that the ramp up schedule was unachievable. Airbus are delivering A380's, but not as many as promised.

below this there is Boeings warning that 787 deliveries will be delayed by at least 2 years with Royal Jordanian being advised 30 months, though with the type having still not even flown even this is subject to further change.

Then below that we have Sukhoi, no less, announcing an 'indefinite' delay to Superjet deliveries.

If Mitsubishi or Bombardier manage to deliver their new aircraft on time they will gain significant bragging rights
