Is The World Going To End In 2012?

no need to worry man.
if you believe it is the end, that may happen.
it is the end of the mayan calendar, and the start of whats called the golden age (where people born 2012 and after will literally have golder skin - makes sense to me, all people do these days is tan but it will be natural)
and as far as i know 2012 is when society will calm down and figure out our problems automatically; such as (down here in Aus) the drought and current petrol prices - we will think of methods they may not resolve them instantly, but help us eliminate the problem over time.
but no apocalypse this time round!

I don't think the world will end no. It's just the usual pilfering of ancient cultures by cranks today to support "their" pet conspiracy theory be that aliens, the new world order etc.

It's not a new phenomena by the way, people have predicting the end of the world for centuries, there are many classic examples. In each case the world carries on regardless!

My dear, we are located within a spiral structure of stars called the Milky Way galaxy and therefore we are always aligned with the centre of the Galaxy! Thus, from our point of view, the centre of the Galaxy as always been in the constellation of Sagitarius.

Same relative point of view, and the fact that we (planet Earth) and all the other planets spin around, that brought us the astronomical idea of the 12 zodiacs, is also bringing you this 'galactic alignment'. The precession of the equinoxes. Familiar? We are about to enter the Aquarius sign due to this. This alignment bit is based on the same stuff...

This is the Galactic Alignment: From our perspective, our Sun (solstice), is aligned (crosses) with the center plane of our galaxy. This is astronomical fact. But this alignment isn't as significant as some think, as the preceding solstices to 2012 are only marginally different then the 2012 solstice.

The Mayans had our point of view in mind when they watched the stars as well.

Well not quite. You see the sun actually passes through 13 constellations, one of them being Ophiuchus which for some reason is not counted as a zodiacal constellation so I don't see how any system which only takes account of 12 constellations can work when the sun actually passes through 13.

Next, our Sun is not called solstice. Solstice is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still) as the sun appears to ceases all motion in declination at this point. Now when you say the Sun crosses the Galaxy, the rotation of our system around the galaxy is about 220km/s, but the velocity perpendicular to the plane of the galaxy is 7km/s, this means that the sun almost orbits the Galactic Plane but not quiet.

Well quite, though they had their own reasons for doing so, it does seem that the Mayan calandar has been adopted by some people who insist the world will end in 2012. However, it is hard to take any of it seriously when much of the basic astronomy is wrong.

I wasn't saying the Mayan Long Count calendar uses the 12 zodiac signs

I was using that as an example to elucidate the how and why they used space to create their calendar.

And sorry for the confusion, I was not trying to equate the 'Sun' with 'Solstice'.

And yes there is an alignment. Relative to us. It will be this way for 700 or so years. This is just astronomy.

Yes It's true, the Dovers bought the big one a while back
and left me with that pesky dawg.

A you may be aware, I've 'grown' since that evening at
the Swingers party and now, with Big Moira as a cohort,
I can develop further.

I think that 2012 will be a fine year, I'm looking around at
about that time that maybe 'her' and me will buy our place,
and if things turn out maybe a pick-up, a gunrack and a skinny
hound that will out outta the window.

The world was supposed to have ended 10 times in the past 10 years alone. Chalk up how many idiots that have come along in the past 5,000 years alone with that shlock about the end of the world and you'll have a long term cottage industry of this nonsense.

The only thing that'll happen in 2012 is you'll sit around kicking yourself in the ass for wasting so much time worring about 2012 and realize how much of a sucker you and millions of other people have been with this end of the world crap.

These stories are only scams perpetrated to keep you fearful and off your game.

Nature rewards only one thing: performance.
