Mental Retardation is Reverse Evolution

Dude, from your own source:

The increase occurred after the introduction of broader, more-precise diagnostic criteria, increased service availability, and increased awareness of autism

Also, those figures are abolute numbers.

You would need to show cases/ 1000 population going up.

that doesnt change the fact that its there. it exists and its prevalent. and on TV it said that it is increasing, one of the factors considered is the one you mentioned but more and more families get autistic children even though they arent cousins or anything.

we have 2 factors to consider: innate and external
innate one is genetics that could be inherited. but the flaw can come from irregular mutations.
external is the easy part. its pollution and chemicals.

The figures you showed me are unscientific, my friend.

Just because the number is going up overall does not indicate higher prevalence. As the population goes up, so shall the number of recorded incidences of autism and mental retardation.

If the stats show an increase in the proportion of mentally handicapped in society, then that would be an interesting trend.

Also to whoever said "dont use the word retard, its offensive" please take note that "retardation" is a clinical term for those with an intelligence quotient below 70. It is only "offensive" when used outside of this context.

Not attempting to derail the thread or anything, but wouldn't backward-evolution, or any evolution for that matter, still be considered evolution if put in an absolute sense?

If you look at it like that, it's entirely possible that humans have evolved from monkeys, then devolved, then evolved again and no one knew about it.

Perhaps there are monkeys whom possess human genetics in their ancestral gene-structure.

Or, as our 19th century contempararies might have put it - "Poppycock!"

Man evolving from monkeys was bad enough for the christian community, but monkeys evolving from Man?

Inconceivable!

Wouldn't it require also that people start preferring mentally challenged people as mating partners? Doesn't evolution (reverse or normal) require that the surviving genes are the preferred ones? Are we going to see a future generations running around with a fetish for retards? Am I totally lost?

i think its obvious that an autistic person doesnt always produce another autistic, remember forest gump. but the way devolution works by nature favoring a certain type over the other but if we say that whoever reproduces more wins is irrelevant since autistic people are people too, we share the same genes and we any of us can give birth to an autistic person meaning that the genes required for devolution is there.

and like said before another theory about evolution would be that apes are devolved humans.
now about the bacteria article, wont it be great to have all deadly bacteria devolve so there wont be any superbugs left.

a fear factor here could be that in the future all newborns around the world might be autistic. would it be because of backward evolution.

Darwin said that occationally a varient upon a spiecies will ocurr of its own designs, and that changes which increas survivability will become more comon. It is possible that these so called reverse evloution cases are as such. Therefore, just leave things be and it will work out. Or, you know, I'm completely rong.

Well evolution typically means the survival of the fittest. The last 100 years that has changed dramatically, modern medicine and food production has allowed the least intelligent populations to expand dramatically.

These days those populations with the higher iq's often breed too little, Japan and many Western European countries are often facing a problem because their indiginous people are NOT having enough children. While in the third world populations (often with average iq's in the 70 range) are growing quite fast because they benefit from technologies they never could have invented on their own.

Oh with regard to the Turkish handwalkers, I saw a documentary on that and I believe they finally decided the problem was retardation (due to inbreeding) and the fact that when they were small children they did not receive the individual attention that most developmentally disable kids would get to walk upright. The documentary pointed out that in western countries if children of 2 or 3 did not start walking their parents would get therapy for them, but these people did not receive that.

I mispoke before trying to say that when that word is not used by scientists a lot of times it can be derogatory towards mentally handicapped people. I just imagine what someones entire life would be like with the mind of a 10 or 12 year old being made fun of or taken advantage of by society. Can be used as an insult which is just ignorant or attacking the person like racial slurs, sexism or agism, ect. I am sorry it just hit a nerve, I now thats not what you meant just kept seeing the title in recent posts.
I personally had a stroke when I was 13, amnesia (reset then maze) but my condition of inability to learn or grasp large concepts was only temporary. Unfortanetly it happened just before high school and I couldnt function socially or normally for the 4 years and it brought me to where I am today. I am and know mentally ill people and we have a stigma attached to us cause most people dont experience or understand.
Sorry I was just offended, it might be possible to lose IQ and some genetic trais from DNA over time. I just thought of brain handicaps like retardation, autism, parkinsons, strokes, illnesses or any type of dysfunction or damage. And scientists for whatever reason are researching this instead of AIDS, Cancer of some sort of unlimited food supply that can be created through science that could save lives.

This is still important though evolution isnt widely accepted or proven, just the study at first was about an isolated uncivilized group of people. The term used can describe a handicap a lot of people have and sometimes they probably get made fun of because of it. Most people arent scientists that studied this and I thought of peoples siblings, children or people who work in hospitals who might take offense.
Evolution is an amazing concept and could help science greatly, Darwin wrote about a type of bird that had its species live on 2 different islands and over time developed different beaks they think directly related to food supply. Evolutionary changes through generations up or down can be possible, I just assumed a handicap leading to a downward slope towards a missing link or de-evoving and got offended.
