more info

There is a experimental naval base newyork thats used in the Cayuga finger lake.People have even seen a russian sub in these waters.i guess they been testing subs there for years on end.. Because of its depth, Seneca Lake has been a testing site for submarines. There is still a Naval facility at Seneca Lake, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Sonar test facility. Where a scale model of the sonar section of the nuclear submarine USS Seawolf (SSN 21) was tested during the development of this ship. The water is 600 feet deep might i add.

Can't answer your question but one thing which puzzles me is why Lake Superior or lake Michigan are not used as homes to a handful of Ohio Class Trident II subs ?

After all when the Regan administration were looking at the MX Peacekeeper missile the idea was to have a pea in a pod so the enemy never knew where to pinpoint a first strike attack.

By using the great lakes to conceal ICBM subs, there is no danger from hunter killer subs. I'd be interested to hear debate or speculation about the topic.

So i thought subs are only short ranged within 2000 miles? But you do have a point. But since the end of the cold war why would they care anymore? Then again i feel there is gonna be another arms race again.russia pulling out of treaties, reinforcing thier military again and even sticking thier stuff in the red square parade again.actually the cold war never ended it was just underground for that time spand.

The Berlin Wall may have been torn down and Moscow may have casinos and boutiques, but the Cold War never ended. The whole shebang went stealth, so to speak. Anyone who thought otherwise was only fooling himself.

I believe that the Great Lakes are demilitarised as a result of the War of 1812 (which we won, btw). Don't recall the name of the treaty...could it be Treaty of Utrecht? Or Ghent?
