The Mallory & Irvine expedition - any thoughts?

Topic started on 8-5-2008 @ 01:54 PM by Vanitas

The recently revived thread on the mountaineering mystery in Russia, in 1959, albeit the story is of a totally different nature, reignited my own interest in the Mallory/Irvine expedition to Mount Everest.
So I wanted to find out what do members of this website think about it, in view of the evidence recovered so far...

No threads on it?

Well, it's not really a "secret" or a "conspiracy" (I hope!), so it's not really surprising. But I would still like to read opinions about it, if any.

Specifically, I would like to know whether you think they made it to the top (and if so, based on what) - or not.

Just the fresh thoughts of a group of people searching for young Irvine:

Hey!
(Where are those blasted waving icons when you need them?)

That's quite an update... even though it is more than a little disappointing.
(But, hey, at least I am glad I wasn't the only one to admit it...)

Some of the comments are really odd: like the sudden concern with being "graphic", simply by describing the likely scenario, and "what will the families think"...?
Gee, I am sure 85 years later the families were hoping they would still make it back alive...

And another thing: what's with Smythe's "visions"?
I never heard that one before!

I still wish I knew what the reply was about...

Anyway, here is an interview with Smythe's grandson that mentions those "visions".

"The last 1000 ft are not for mere flesh and blood"

It's off-topic considering the main subject of this thread - but there seem to be very few interested in it, anyway.
Besides, since the "tricks" that "the mind plays" on mountaineers are mentioned in the update about Mallory & Irvine, it is somewhat relevant.

Are they always just "tricks of the mind"?
I don't think there's any type of conclusive evidence that would allow such a conclusion.
