All in all I think that the point that is being missed here is the fact that Americans do behave, if not believe (though there are a startling number who do) that we are God's gift to the world and as such can behave anyway we want to without regard for either consequence or opinion.

Most everyone else who is not part of the industral world is forced to make do and as such tend to make their choices far more carefully.

If the survey said that Americans are the souls of conservation and stewardship and the rest of the world are a bunch of pigs I am sure that many of you would be crowing instead of complaining.

I disagree. There's little doubt that Americans (and all western societies) are wasteful, but this particular survey is drawing a quite obvious conclusion: people in rich countries consume more than those in poor countries. Again, when even those conducting the survey readily admit that the poor will consume more if their wealth increases, what does that tell you?

No, the problem here is that some want to paint Americans and others in rich societies as evil, wasteful POS. People are people. Doesn't matter where they live. Given the same means, their consumption patterns will be similar.

The truth? People in the United States and people in Botswana will act exactly the same way if you give them $10 million. The latter may need a few years to adjust and get the mentality of being poor out of their system, but eventually, they'll act the same way.

Technically you can do that, though it depends on the item and if it can be patched or repaired. Although granted these days its cheaper to replace most products with a brand new one rather then get it repaired if it breaks or bugs up.
