Example of "political correctness" from the right: Ron Paul being pilloried at the debates for saying the US's interventionist foreign policy led to the attacks on 911. It was a factual (utterly obvious) statement, but it wasn't "PC" (from a conservative viewpoint) to actually say it.

You might want to pretend it's solely a problem on the left as it serves your ideological purposes, but I'm "not buying it"

Also a good post, but those definitions are too simplistic. You did later expound on what I find to be a serious differences in parties and that is individual rights. Part of that is being pro choice, which like you I also disapprove, but the two go hand in hand. You may not agree with everything that a party stands for, but for me liberal/libertarian is what this country was founded on, and is nothing to be ashamed of no matter how many names they come up with to make it sound weak. Don't fall for the propaganda like the OP obviously has.

In my opinion, I think that both parties serve a purpose and until recently have been in balance. At this time though things have shifted too far to the right and a correction is needed and is sure to come.

Very well put, would quote your entire post in this reply if the mods weren't so uptight about that stuff.

Why thank you kind sir Id like to think that people before they spout of points of views like this would at least do the basic research but a lot of people where spewing and didnt really even know what a libertarian or conservative was so I thought Id point it out and then point out why I am one and not the other.

It makes sense because liberals are realistic and the truth is not a happy thing. The conservatives seem to think what is going on now is good and should keep it this way. By the way remember this is a statistic ....

Of course conservatives are happy. When they see any problem, they just think "what a shame, that person is lazy, glad it's not me." Therefore their happiness depends only on their own individual success, and as hard as it is to succeed in this world, it's easier than finding a way for everyone to succeed.

I think there is a strongly self-serving & thuggish element to be condemned in some versions of modern conservatism.

As well as an unacceptable degree of tolerance/support of various stupid forms of bigotry.

On the other hand, conservatives have valid points about modern "liberalism" - it believes in science-fiction economics, it is willfully naive about violence and war, and can be as restrictive of individuals in it's own way as any right-wing totalism wants to be.

Somewhere outside the currently socially acceptable philosophical territories is where the truth lies, if you ask me

For the record, I find that in our 50 states we all live differently. I am from Hawaii and regardless of C or L , Most people there are always happy.
The human spirit is conditioned to identify the self and feel acceptance. If your raised one way, or not you have to remember
we all have common interest, and in finding common interest , then we must use that as a foundation in order to get along with our diverse society. In retrospect, its like the ying and the yang.........but there are skins like an onion, each individual has different levels of liberal or conservative practices. I don't think one is happier then the other. I think what would make more people happier in the end is if people would just stay out of other peoples views........ if someones views are upsetting you, stay home and mind your own business, or learn that people are diverse, not everyone gets along, thats ok. but we all have the right to have our views.
look for common ground, its not that hard I think if everyone did that, then both parties would be better off.

I find it personally odd, since looking at teh dynamic between my best friend and I, he is ultra bleeding heart liberal, and I'm probably about the most conservative person he knows.

heres the weirdest part, we get along great and come up with all kinds of solutions to things we're doing that satisify both side of our views..

whats the odd factor that lets this happen.. neither one of us are religious. spiritual yeah, but not religious. makes one think at times, you know?

and we're both generally happy people, but he is more prone ot go off than I am.

what do I see that causes this? Conservatives tend to take a longer view of things, liberals are more "here and now' in their view. some may say short sighted and lack of perspective, but really, theres no reason the two can't work together. look at the dynamic in most corporations. supervisors are day to day 'here and now' types, managers are more long view types. why can't we see the same thing? oh right, politics isn't about getting things done fo rthe good of everyone anymore, its like a sporting event where someone has to win an dif its not your team, you'll riot in teh streets.

If you want to see the statistical differences between "liberals" and "conservatives" then you should check out www.conservative-truths.com...

This site uses Census Bureau statistical reports comparing liberal and conservative presidencies as well as liberal and conservative states based on the 2004 Presidential Election results. This is obviously an oversimplification to determine a state's ideological leanings, but it is the only way to come up with a way to differentiate between the states.

The differences presented may be surprising to you.

Conservatives Happier Than Liberals

news.yahoo.com

Individuals with conservative ideologies are happier than liberal-leaners, and new research pinpoints the reason: Conservatives rationalize social and economic inequalities.
(visit the link for the full news article)

That is because Liberals hate Big Oil (Exxon, Shell, etc.) for high oil prices and yet fight to stop the oil companies from doing anything like drill or build refineries that would help increase supply and lower prices for consumers.

That is because Liberals hate the Second Amendment so much that they create "gun free" zones and shackle the police with restrictions and then are shocked when criminals use guns with impunity.

That is because Liberals tend to believe in Evolution and then observe the deterioration of humanity.

If I was a Liberal, I would be depressed too!

The same article also says:

The rationalization measure included statements such as: "It is not really that big a problem if some people have more of a chance in life than others," and "This country would be better off if we worried less about how equal people are."

In my book thats called indifference to humanity. Plain and simple!

We can go on and on discussing which system works better but I think a system that cares for all(to some degree) is much preferrable to one that cares only for the priviliged. Thats why socialism and communism was developed: to limit social inequality.

People who have more should pay more and corporations, while greatly valued assets within any society, should contribute the bulk. Why? Because they can and should!

Maybe Liberals aren't happy because there is a pro-war Conservative controlling the White House, sending our troops into a war he mislead us about, taking away our privacy, and slowly sending our economy to hell?

this is exactly my point we live in a land today where because of the rich elite in power only they benefit. the rich and wealthy conservatives have manuvered and planned so that they reap and reap and gain all the real wealth. while the so called poor working class trash which is what we all are to them could care less if we eat or starve, have shelter or are left in the streets. the bottom line is this the wealthy elitist like the Bush family, John Kerry.the Rockefellers, the Rotheschild etc do not care at all about the less fortunate and poor of the world.

that statement makes no sense. Does anyone know what a true conservative is anymore? Conservatism simply means adhering to previouslly established rules and regulations... so in The United States a conservative would be one who adheres to the U.S. constitution. So as you can see the Republican Party is not conservative but actually more neo-liberal in their international policies in their radical attempts to spread democracy. But if you actually took that statement literally it makes little sense that the conservatives are happier because they rationalize social and economic inequalities because that simply has nothing to do with one's political views, nor would one who believes in the U.S. constitution settle for the inequalities we face today.

Where can I meet some of these happy conservatives? Perhaps they only interviewed millionaires who got their wealth through inheritance! Now that would make me very happy!
