What expectations did Osama bin Laden have of hijacking 4 planes and flying them into his 4 targets unmolested?

Surly he new knew of NORADs existence, and it makes sense that he researched the response time of NORAD's interceptions.

How could he be smart enough to plan 911 and be stupid enough to assume the planes would not be shot down?
