There are a lot of cheer leaders here for the F-35, but it has a serious weight problem,

You can dismiss this by saying they are going to address the problem.

But it is tough to reduce empty weight in airplanes and once put into serial production, they get heavier, not lighter.

Where is your source? Any ways I would trade the
f-35c for the f-22n any day!

A Nimitz class strike carrier will be useless with 2 air superiority aircraft varients (F18E and F/N-22) and no dedicated strike aircraft!

the JSF is a fine aircraft so is the f22 frankly you cant have a war with just 1 as the man said
but the f22 on a carrier would be effective

The super hornett is an advanced version of the hornet, which is a multi-role aircraft not air superiority aircraft, whilea f-22 could be eequipped with precision guidance like the bombcat and be just as good. Too bad the navy cant have the JSF, f-22n and the superr hornet (too unbeatable)

Britain has an order for a bunch of these to replace our Harrier Jumpjets but the MOD has said the JSF is too heavy for our (puny) aircraft carriers and they are not due for deployment until 2012 anyway.

By 2012 most of us might not be here

F-22 doesnt have big enough weapon bays to be a strike aircraft. A strike aircraft is much more valuable in a war than a fighter, especially if the carrier its flying from has 6 escorts with 64 air defence missiles on each.

The JSF will be put into service at the same time as HMS Queen Elizabeth ( dont confuse with RMS Queen Elizabeth 2)

I was just wondering if someone could help me out. This may have given this before, but I dont want to go through the 100 some-odd posts to find this (hope you-all understand...). Is there a site that I could find the actual specs on a F-35 (such as speed, wieght, ect.)? My freind at work is arguing with me about which is better, a F-18A or a F-35B. I told him it was like comparing a Dodge Neon vs. a Viper, but he didn't belive me!!!

You tell your friend that the only think that can pull over on a F-35 is a striker version of the X-43A which I don't think will exist soon, unless you count Aurora...

Specs I got em here:
Type: Single Seat Multi-Role Fighter

Origin: US/UK

Pwerplant: (X-32A/C) one Pratt & Whitney JSF119-PW-611 turbofan engine with axisymmetric (thurst vectoring) nozzle, rated at c 40,000 lb st (177.90 kN) with afterburning: (X-32B) one JSF119-611S turbofan engine rated at a total of 37,000 lb st (164.40 kN) for VTOL.

Armament: internal Boeing/Mauser 27-mm Cannons, disposable stories include two AIM-120 AMRAAMs and 1,000 lb or 2,000 lb GBU-31/32 JDAM bombs.

As far as speed...I think Mach 1.54 I can't remember off the top of my head... let me check on that.

the F-32 just looks like a "stealtyed up corsair A-7"

but for the F-35 we have to wait for the real results of what it in real aircombatsituations will be able to do.
rightnow only demo propaganda figures are avaible and these are not the best things to rely on to get a good "real idea"

but one component of the engine i am not keen on is the lift fan drive shaft !
the wear and tear and the stress on that axle because of the high rpm it will have to withstand are a thing that worries me very much !
if that axle goes malfunctioning while the aircraft is in flight or hovering... !!

I've heard that the JSF is supposed to have no thermal signature. This is being accomplished by venting all waste heat into the fuel system I believe. Does anybody know exactly how much waste heat a typical fighter produces? I know it's carrying about 16000lbs of fuel, but it seems like pumping that much heat into your fuel could create issues. Anyone know how hot jet fuel can get, before it creates problems?

That is true the F/A-22 Raptor was made to be an air superiority fighter but ever say never the F/A-22 can carry 3-4 more weapons on its external hard points that it can carry inside so the Raptor can be a limited strike aircraft though its not meant to be.

You are correct West Point, as originally envisiaged the ATF program was to have NO air to ground capability. The doubletalk of todays Pentagon officials was that it "always" had that capacity built in but only after they went from DEM/VAL to EMD did they clarify that it should have some kind of A/G capability. They had to reengineer the weapons bay to hold the JDAMs. Sloppy procuremen t practices like that are no fault of Lockheed, not their fault they were told to design a weapon bay to hold 4 standard or 6 compressed carriage AMRAAMs then be told it had to fit a GPS bomb in there. Boeing got stung by the NAVY too during the JSF competition, their delta wing was suddenly uncompetative by an increased maneuvering reqirement. They had to design the whole plane over again and looked bad because of it. Lockheeds by comparision has changed little since DEM/VAL stage.
