Israeli military enlists robotic soldier

www.msnbc.msn.com

NES TZIONA, Israel - Israel's newest soldier can see at night, never nods off on sentry duty and can carry 660 pounds without complaining.

The Guardium, an unmanned ground vehicle commissioned by the Israeli military and shown to The Associated Press on Monday, is essentially a robotic soldier, among the first in the world to be operational. It can replace human soldiers in dangerous roles, cutting casualty rates.

This is amazing. This thing can even act autonomously (cue terminator music). One of the best parts of the story:

Following pre-programmed routes, it can navigate alone through cities — the vehicle knows how to deal with intersections, traffic and road markings. It can patrol borders, its cameras scanning 360 degrees at all times, and alert operators if it spots anything suspicious.

I wonder how long before we get a contract for them? I'm thinking our Cav Scouts could find a definite use for them. Now just mount some equipment so It can call for fire or air support, from LRS drones, and you have the Scout of the future.

Found an image of the bot'.

looky looky image here!

Judging from the dimensions of the vehicle/bot/whatever you want to call it, you could probably disguise it as a bush or a rock and people'd be none the wiser.

An expendable survellience tool that can penetrate enemy lines without them even knowing what it is that's penetrated them...

All you'd need to do is turn off the electricity on the border fences and this thing could put a hole in it itself, next thing you know the enemy forces are searching for a saboteur that doesn't even exist...

You could probaby get it to lay mines over important logistical supply lines if you wanted, and it'd be off again disguised as a rock while the enemy sits there wondering how the hell their opponents are getting behind their front lines.

Not only a good watchman, but an incredibly powerful tool of subterfuge.

If Active Camo, especially the fiber optic kind is pefected there would be no need for a disguise. It could just blend in with its surroundings, like the Predator. (The Stan Winston alien, not the UAV).

This discussion is turning into some sort of wacky Short-Circuit debate topic.

What are the chances, i wonder - of one of these things going haywire and awolling all over washington.

It's about time the Israelis start to 'man' their own operations. They've been using U.S. Forces and lives for the last 7 years

What we have been doing for the past seven years is the same stuff we have been doing since we came into existence. It has barely anything to do with Israel. The US does what is in its best interests historically and that usally means alot of collateral damage takes place. We have been causing "collateral damge" since we crossed the Appalachians and its has had nothing at all to do with Jews, Zionists, or Israel.
