I give you a star, for listing first the first and last of Roleplaying Games.

And quite possibly, the best game ever made.

Viva La Xenogears.

Right now, I'm hooked on Metroid Prime Corruption and stop playing Trackmania Nations altogether.
I really wish they speed things up on Star Trek Online.

Xenogears is definitely the best, the one and only kind unfortunately.

dude, we were separated at birth.

Just throw in Freddy Pharkas and the original Leisure Suit Larry series by Al Lowe, and this list is ready to be laminated and buried in a time capsule.

WHAT!? No mention of Dawn Of War
although its a fairly new game I'd say its one of the best RTS games ever made.

Supreme Commanders a good one too, its a bit predictable after a while but thats why the internet was invented
wasn't it??

My fav platform game is Abes Odyssey for the PS1, what a classic!

I remember playing Mario Cart on the Nintendo 64 when I was in 4th and 5th grade. It was an epic game, awesome and addictive back then!

Other really good racing games I liked are Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2. Awesome game, has Lamborghini's, Ferrari's, Aston Martins, and even the McLaren F1. It was a great game when it came out in 2002, as the graphics were fairly good for the time and the cars in the game were brand new '02 and maybe even '03 models.

Does anyone else think Grand Theft Auto 3 or Call of Duty should be somewhere on the list of the OPs? I don't really like Call of Duty, but many people in my school are obsessed with it. I have played Grand Theft Auto though and thought it was the best game ever the first time I played it.

I play all the Dawn of War games except Soulstorm (similar to Dark Crusade I heard). Since it's an all time list, of course new games could also be included, but I still prefer the C&C series.

Games have evolved so much since I started playing so I thought I'd split mine into two, now and all time, because let's face it Oblivion is a million times better than Riddle of the Sphinx (it's got graphics for a start), but the latter impressed me enormously in 1982 (showing my age) and deserves a mention. So here they are:

Best RPG: now - Oblivion - X360
all time - Riddle of the Sphinx - BBC Micro

Best FPS: now - Halo Series - Xbox/X360
all time - Hired Guns - Amiga
(Operation Wolf (Spectrum) should get a mention here too)

Best Action/3rd Person: now/all time - Path of Neo - Xbox

Best Grand/Action Adventure: Is this were GTA IV goes?

Best Sports: now - John Madden series - Any platform
all time - Track And Field - Spectrum

Best Racing: now - Project Gotham Racing series - Xbox/X360
all time - Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge - Amiga

Best Platform: now/all time - Wonderboy in Monsterland - Sega MS

Best Fighting: now - Fight Night 3 - X360
all time - Tekken 2 - Playstation

Best RTS: now/all time - Command and Conquer series - Any platform

On a side note, does anyone remember Lander on the Archimedes A3000?

All mine are for PC unless otherwise stated, since that's pretty much the only console I play extensively. Also, most of my games are a bit older, so it excludes anything recent.

Best RPG: Neverwinter Nights
Best FPS: Deus Ex, Doom 2, Unreal Tournament
Best Racing: Star Wars Pod Racer (PC and N64)
Best Fighting: Soul Calibur II (Xbox 360)
Best RTS: Master of Orion 2, Age of Empires 2

Others:
-Magic: the Gathering, by Microprose
-most roguelikes

I'll add regarding the Deus Ex game.

First it's easily the best game that I've ever played. Secondly, it's not exactly an FPS game, it's more like a First Person RPG game.

Games in that genre are rare. Here's my list for that genre:

Deus Ex, No One Lives Forever 2, Deus Ex Invisible War, Fallout 3 series.

Future games that might be interesting: Alan Wake, Prototype. These two are in third person and a grand adventure action kinda game.

Yeah, I suppose you are right there about Deus Ex. I didn't really get into the RP aspect of it, since it felt to me like there was usually only one path to follow, and that the few places you had a choice didn't impact things much. Like near the beginning there's some guy in the Statue of Liberty, and you can either kill him or capture him, and as far as I could tell, the only difference was that if you killed him, you got a bit of a scolding in the between-areas dialogue :p It's definitely a great game, and has lots of stuff ATS members would like. (illuminati, area 51, corrupt governments and corporations, secret alien/military tech; basically, imagine if everything on ATS is true and put into one game; that's Deus Ex)

Fallout 1 was great. I haven't played 2 or 3 yet, though I do have 2 laying around somewhere, and my brother has 3 on his computer (I can't run it on mine) and it looks really sweet. 2 looks basically like 1, which is still a good thing.
