Drug Test Or DNA Profile..

Topic started on 30-4-2008 @ 02:14 PM by rhawkins

So I've been working in the club biz for 14 years now, and drug testing isn't a huge requirement(duh). So as I decide to re-enter the "real"world, I hear about saliva drug testing (swab your mouth and off it goes to be tested). My question is, is it wrong to feel slightly uncomfortable about that. Hell I'll piss in a cup for ya but, that just seems a little off to me. I have nothing to hide (and my test will come back clean), but to me it seems weird. Its like the old saying, " the question isn't if your paranoid. The question is are you paranoid enough".

Yes, it is a bit weird, isn't it? The urine testing is a bit shonky too.

For example, in Australia, (by Australian and New Zealand standard 4308) when screening for cannabis, they screen for the inactive metabolite delta-9-carboxy-thc. This substance has no effect on the mind or body, so it doesn't even meet most definitions of the word "drug". They should be screening for delta-9-thc, the psychoactive substance.

This is why the Federal Government states on their health website that this test "cannot be used as an indication of impairment".

Yet where I work, if a positive result is detected, you must take leave because you are "unfit for work". So that's exactly what it is being used for, isn't it?

The saliva test also screens for this same inactive metabolite, but has a detection rate of 12 hours or so, so for OH&S purposes, it has some credit.

So I am with you on this one. Science itself proves that the urine tests are not for what we are told they are - there is another reason. So taking DNA samples from the saliva tests could be a real possibility...

All the alcohol swab tests I've seen give the results on the spot.

I've never seen a swab test for other drugs.

I wouldn't worry about it, because DNA testing is very expensive relative to a urinalysis, but like I said, based on the tests I've seen you can't confuse an alcohol test with a DNA test.

I've often said that it's only a matter of time before a workplace urinal will be capable of testing your urine , implementing facial recognition, and printing out a pink slip if applicable.

Farfetched, yes. Probable?
