Colossal Squid- Worlds largest eyes

Topic started on 30-4-2008 @ 06:56 AM by Kr0n0s

I wasnt sure where to put this, Its a bit of science with some trivia added on I suppose.
I've been sort of fascinated with this creature since they finally hauled one out of the depths, colossal squids are massive and viscous, theyre main and possibly only predator is the sperm whale.
This specimen here has an eye as big as a soccer ball with a lense the size of an orange, it is the largest eye ever seen or studied.
I think this one was some 26-30' long and theyre estimated to grow up to 50' long, makes the crakken myth sound even more plausible now

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Marine scientists studying the carcass of a rare colossal squid said Wednesday they had measured its eye at 27 centimeters (10.8 inches) across — larger than a dinner plate and the biggest animal eye on earth.

One of the quid's two eyes, with a lens as big as an orange, was found intact as the scientists examined the creature while it was slowly defrosted at New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa. It has been preserved there since being caught in the Ross Sea off Antarctica's northern coast last year.

"This is the only intact eye (of a colossal squid) that's ever been found. It's spectacular," said Auckland University of Technology squid specialist Kat Bolstad, one of a team of international scientists brought in to examine the creature.

"It's the largest known eye in the animal kingdom," Bolstad told The Associated Press.

The squid is the biggest specimen ever caught of the rare and mysterious deep-water species Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni, or colossal squid. It is 26-feet long and weighs almost 1,089-pound, but scientists believe the species may grow up to 46 feet long.

Wow, that is really cool! I find it incredibly surprising that this is the first colossal squid eye that they've gotten to study. I guess the few other squid corpses that they've found must've been only partially intact or something.

It is very disturbing that these deep sea animals once never seen by man are now finding themselves in the same category as beached whales and other endangered species.

What is going on and why are they dying and becoming more common place today than ever before in recored history?

Good to see you K0s! I have missed seeing you around the UFO forums.
mikesingh our new conspiracy master, what do you think?
