Criminal Psych? It's called criminology last i checked with my forensics teacher.

I wanted to be a cop too at one point.

Anyway, i do recall a certain text that may be similar to the one you read on the BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill) killer (which seems to be required reading) in which it was all started by a single situation in which the murderer acquainted himself with his preferred method of causing death.

I'm suspecting that the first case listed isn't the first murder, and that the perps were probably involved in other murders that have either yet to be discovered, or were attributed to other causes (like drowning).

The smiley is probably just a little something for the media - killers like these are well aware of the kind of damage they can do thanks to the media frenzy that can erupt.

Twin Cities ABC News channel 5 "Eyewitness News" is the station that broke the silence within the media, at least here in the area.

What are officials doing about the new Jenkins evidence?

There is a 2-part video report on the page, links to reports, and more. Pretty interesting actually. Originally, the Minneapolis Police wern't even treating the Jenkins case as a murder / foul play, but as an alcohol related accident. Right away, alot of people around here questioned why, considering the deaths in Wisconsin that were the exact same way - young collage students, last seen at a bar, leaving alone.

I think this is the best evidence that something fishy is going on.

Richard Hlavaty- Reported missing following a witnessed altercation downtown, was chased into the river by a group of people along with his brother. Brother made it, Richard drowned. Autopsy was done cause of death drowning/ Manner accident. BAC .27

Source (ppt)

``Is it possible that someone pushed these people in the water?'' asked Capt. James Schleifer, chief of the La Crosse Police Department's detective bureau. ``It's absolutely possible, but not likely.''

It is unlikely that someone unknown to the victims killed them, based on what police know and the evidence, Schleifer said.

In fact, the death of 19-year-old Richard Hlavaty, who with his brother, James, was chased from Third and Pearl streets after a fight downtown in July 1997, should not be considered with the other four river deaths, the detective said.

``I take extreme issue with anyone who tries to connect evidence in the Hlavaty case to these other four deaths,'' Schleifer said. ``The Hlavaty case is not remotely related. He was chased into the river.''

The Hlavatys were outnumbered by a group of guys chasing them and they jumped into the river to escape, he said. The group threw rocks at the two brothers. Richard Hlavaty drowned, but an autopsy showed numerous injuries from rocks being thrown at him. The injuries caused by rocks were not severe enough to cause death, a medical examiner's report said.

No one, not even James Hlavaty, could identify the individuals who chased him. Schleifer said foul play was involved in the death, and if people had been identified, they would have faced charges, such as reckless homicide or manslaughter.

An autopsy determined that Richard Hlavaty's blood alcohol content was 0.271 at the time of death — nearly three times the legal limit.

The cause of death was drowning, but the manner of death was ruled undetermined.

I believe this was among the first of the suspicious deaths. No serial killer has ever achieved 100 percent effectiveness. I imagine they would be sloppy at first. Does this not sound.... strange?

Hiyah Dulcimer,

Great research and great thread....that's so funny too that you posted this, I have been thinking just here and there, about all the weird MALE college student disappearances the last 3 or so years...I had no idea they went back that far...

I remember one too that I didn't see in your list of research, I forget what state, but same as the others, disappeared intoxicated from a dorm party to head back to his room a few floors away, never seen again...his cell phone, all his clothes and belongings still in his room...and they eventually found him in a work closet in the dorm, amid some sort of high voltage electrical equipment dead...apparently of electrical shock...and there was one recently too I think in Colorado, male student, on spring break skiing, disappeared after a heavy night of drinking...found I think on a nearby river bank, dead of exposure is what they determined the cause...

But I have been even commenting to my family and friends, what's up with MALE college students also disappearing etc...since we're all familiar with the female college students vanishing, showing up later raped and killed all over the country, almost seems like 1 a week nowadays...but yes I had noticed that male students are disappearing...there's even a few too who haven't even been found if I am remembering right...after I get some sleep, I will google for the ones I personally remember then check them against your lists throughout these threads....

Anyway, star and flagged, great research, thanks for posting

Editing to add...the common denominator seems to be they were all HIGHLY intoxicated, and that would obviously render them way less helpless to fend off a physical attack from another male...reminds me of Jeffrey Dahmer, the only serial killer I can think of right now, besides maybe Gacey, who preyed on teen boys or older, and both rendered them somewhat helpless with alcohol and drugs or just preyed on men already drunk...which makes sense, to limit the fighting back aspect.

Also that smiley face graffiti is flat out creepy also.

Just how many of these cases are there? There is just too much of this... very strange.

As 21 year old Joshua Szostak was laid to rest Saturday, there are new questions being raised about whether or not his death is connected to the murder of a Minneapolis college student.

Szostak's body was discovered in the Hudson River on Tuesday. He had been missing since December 23rd after leaving an Albany bar. Autopsy results ruled he drowned and there was no foul play. Albany Police have since closed the investigation.

But now a Minneapolis TV station is reporting two retired NYPD detectives are saying that Szostak's death could be connected to the deaths of about 40 other college men around the country including that of University of Minnesota student Chris Jenkins. Their deaths were all similar.

Szostak's father Bill responded to that on Radio 810 WGY.

Bill Szostak said, "Anything is possible. I'm not closing any doors. I'm leaving all options open. All I know is that my son may have had a few drinks, but remember he had the ability to walk to the port...no one just walks into the river. If anybody knows my son, that's a complete stretch of the truth."

It's still unclear why Szostak's cell phone was found near a stolen DEC vehicle.

Toxicology results are expected to come back in a few weeks.

Why was the cell phone found by a stolen vehicle?

Albany County District Attorney.

Police were never able to determine why Josh's cell phone was found steps from where a DEC vehicle was stolen. That car was later found damaged and abandoned at the Port of Albany.

There is some interesting information on this page. I cannot verify if it was all said by the men investigating these crimes.

Some smiley faces I have not seen before.

Because the smiley face gang would plant evidence such as wallets or cell phones far away from where they actually dumped their victim’s unconscious bodies in the water, local police following up on the missing person’s reports would assume the young men were accidental drowning victimes instead of deliberate murders.

I don't know how they would know any of this part.

The smiley face gang is loosely connected via the Internet and various members meet up, kidnap young college-age men off the street by throwing them into a waiting cargo van, then torture their victims for hours before dumping the unconscious young men into a nearby river.

The Matthew William Kruziki killing seems like a taunt at the police. There seems to be the most evidence of a thought out killing in this case.

Matt Kruziki was driving east through Iowa when he and his buddy decided they should rest for the night. They stopped in Dubuque and checked into a motel. It was still early, so they went across the river to a strip club, The River Queen Lounge, in East Dubuque, Iowa. He left the bar early in the morning on Christmas Eve, 2005.

He was never seen alive again.

On Saturday, March 18, 2006, a water plane pilot was flying low over the Mississippi River in Illinois when he noticed something floating in the water. A closer look horrified the pilot -- it was a body.

The pilot called 9-1-1, and authorities set to work identifying the body. An autopsy revealed that the body belonged to 24-year-old Matthew Kruziki, who had gone missing on Christmas Eve 2005.

A coroner's report indicated Kruziki had drowned and that there were no signs of foul play.

This is the case in which they used the "code word" and found a smiley face.

Matt’s body was found, floating in the Mississippi River on March 18, 2006. The coroner’s report said there were no signs of foul play. There are three things about this case that are very interesting. One, the coroner’s report said no foul play. Two, Matt’s body was located near Sinsiniwa Street and at that location, a crude smiley face was also found.

...

The detectives have visited every site of a reported drowning, searching for the location of the body entering the water, not where found. At each location, they have found a disturbing symbol, a smiley face. They have found the smiley face in Wisconsin, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and most recently in Iowa.

In Michigan, with the usual sick graffiti, they found the word, “Sinsiniwa.” It meant nothing, at least, until they arrived in East Dubuque, Illinois. Matt Kruziki’s body went into the river at the foot of Sinsiniwa Avenue.

Now there is also one more interesting part of this case.... possibly the most chilling.

Bill Kruziki, Matt's father, is no stranger to criminal investigations. He's a former Wisconsin sheriff and the current US Marshal for the Eastern District of Wisconsin. Now, the investigator has also become a victim and it makes his search for answers all the more poignant.
