First off, this is not a thread where the possibility or impossibility of superpowers is discussed. My intention for this thread is too discuss what social implications would possibly come about if suddenly an organization of people with real superpowers became publically known. Again, I am not asking for any one to prove or disprove super or paranormal powers, I would just like to hear some opinions on what might happen to the world, any problems, big or small, or to the way that people look at themselves and the world, given what our society is like right now and the changes occuring at the moment.

Thank You.

For example, I would be worried that if someone, or a group, come out into the public who had "superpowers", they would probably be accused of such things as witchcraft and would be persecuted terribly. I think that depending on the timing and how they come out, will depend a lot on how the world and society will react to them. What are some of your thoughts?

Generally, we'd praise them for helping us, pick them apart on conspiracy forums, dig deep into their social lives, have tons of slander and libel that they can't dfo anything about and probably end up breaking up. Heck, if we try hard enough we could get one of two of them to commit suicide I bet.
ANd that's just if they never make a mistake, or no one rallies against them actively. Basicaly, they'de be celebrities, only with special powers to do things people dream of and we'll hate the and fear them for it. We'll find out how to kill them and someone will do it.
If they try to defend themselves, no matter how they try to do it, people will call fowl. THey'd be sued for any property damage and whatever else people could come up with.
Anyone they'd fight would probably be able to at least countersue for damages or make themsevles a victim in this "Society failed me" country.

What do you think would in the scientific and spiritual community?

It's an interesting question you pose, it would require a good understanding of human nature and the social intricacies of the varying cultures.Religion is also a deciding factor in how super-heroes would be viewed. Many things would have to be considered when coming to a conclusion on what would happen in the first initial stages of the organization coming to light. We have to first understand what sort of philosophy that this organization would adopt when it is dealing with bringing justice and peace to the world. How would this organization go about doing so?To pick a few known methods based on a certain defined ideology, would this organization fight to remove the dictators of the world and create a democracy, bring an end to communism and regimes so that the people have a voice, end world hunger through controlling the weather, bring order to the chaos and crime by creating a legion of super-powered police forces?

These would all be fine examples, but this leads to other questions of ethics and morals. In removing dictators they may have a problem similar to the problem in Iraq.A country destabilized, where fundamentalism takes precedence in the affairs of the people. Some will oppose this change, and fight the change as a human rights violation as is the case in Iraq now.Not to mention the many conspiracy theories surrounding these kind of actions.

Bringing an end to communism would also drastically influence the world market. It is from places like china that most of our goods come from, the people there suffer under the need for cheaply made goods.Though if china were to change to a country very similar to America, prices would rise which would lead to suffering in many of the countries world-wide.People would have less money to buy other things and would be surviving to make ends meet on minimum wage jobs even more so than it is today.

Changing the weather so that crops would grow better would also affect many ecological systems. In africa for instance, the species of animals there are all adapted to brief rainy periods.A change in the weather there to where it is raining a few days every month would force many species to adapt quickly or face extinction. It would change the very fabric of life on this planet, less in some areas and greater in others.

If they were to create a mass of super-powered police, it would change the country to where they are in to a place that would be ruled by the police.Which in some cases it may become a police-state, a state in which few would be allowed freedoms.People would begin to feel that they are no longer in a free country, because of a greater police force exercising its will over the people. It would feel like socialism. With greater forces to stop drug abuse, it would lead to a media backlash as there are many people who are fighting to get "Weed" legalized as a medical drug.

The answers aren't always clear, though if it were possible to work through these issues and find the perfect solutions an organization like this is possible and could really help the world.

I would imagine at first there would a great deal of suspicion and negative media, perhaps rooted in religion maybe even a fear of the unknown.Though I feel that people would eventually warm up the organization once it proves itself as a beneficial force. It would attract the minorities and the rebels who desire a better future. It really depends on how the organization conducts itself I feel. There so much to discuss about this topic that its a little tricky to pin-point exact reactions.Though I do feel it would be a good thing ^~^.

It really depends on what the "Abilities," would be, if it were something as simple as changing the weather, then they would probably help environmental issues, anything else, and I imagine they would actually just use it for personal gain.

But if they did become known publically as a group, I think they would be killed off.

They would be different enough to be considered genetically different, so we would take a hostility towards them, but they would be similar enough to be using the same lifestyle as us.

This may sound strange, but after the initial "coming out" of a group or individuals, there is a good possibility that more with powers or such abilities would reveal themselves, do you think that we would then have an issue such as that presented in the X-Men movies? the prejudice and other problems

It may very well come to that, a world in which intolerance rules. It really depends on whether or not the given society tends to liberalism. If an organization were to be released today, I feel it would take much longer for the organization to gather a positive view about itself.Perhaps in 10 years time, people will be more accepting, though all of this is speculation. If it happens, we'll know ^~^

COnsidering how tolerant we generally are of people who are jus tlike us, I can't see us being any better towards people with amazing abilities. Yeah, the Xmen movies would be a good idea. It'd probably even be worse.

It depends on what they wanted to do, and by what means.

I mean are they like the x-men organization or like the other one guided by Magneto.

I feel that depending on how these people would be treated will also determine what kinds of other organizations come about. The truth about Magneto is that he cares so deeply for his fellow mutants that he will do whatever he can to ensure their freedom. In terms of the political spectrum, Xavier is liberal and Magneto is radical. It seem to me that societies treatment of such people would determine a lot about who these people would develop into and become.

first of all I'd give them credit for coming out saying the truth, afterall no one would either know about their existence otherwise.

Probably if they revealed who they were they'd only do that if they were reasonably sure that other people couldn't do much against them or that possibly they could comprehend.

If their intent is to help they shouldn't fear a bad response, but maybe if they didn't say the whole truth , people should be worried about what else they were hiding and why.

If they want to live openly, Lestat of the Ann Rice novels come to mind.

If they want to take a lesson from Hitler and his brown shirted SA thugs, they could go that route,

Or if possible about psi, place 'seeds' in the minds of every young child they come across, making it easier for the mainstream to accept.

I could think of a fewmore ways for this to happen..

Send me a tell if you want to know more..

How do you think the general public would react to "superheroes" if there was also a group of "supervillians" as well? Would they be weary of anyone with abilities then? Or would they trust the superheroes even more?

Frank Herbert suggested that the appearance of a superhuman would irreparably damage the fabric of society. Apparently, the point of the Dune series was to show a society experiencing the appearance of a superhuman being.

Paul Atreides coming into his own as the kwizatz haderach, becoming the Emperor Paul "Muad'dib" Atreides, and leading a jihad across the galaxy (or more accurately, riding the wave of a jihad driven by his Fremen followers), being worshipped as a god - all of this was Herbert's take. He pushes the idea even further with Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune.

thank you for that take on this situation, I never knew that. I may have to watch those so understand his veiw fully, but I think I understand a little of what Frank Herbert tries to say. I have often thought that if superheroes did come out, that they would be seen as gods. That would be difficult for them to get over and may lead them to become something they weren't in the beginning. would make then egotistical, and would likely lead them to try controlling the world. I also feel that there would be people with abilities that would still against that happening. Thank you for your response, it has gotten me thinking about this again.

they would be hated.. especially by the left wing democrats, that dont think any one should have more of one thing than anyone else, it just wouldnt be fair to the rest of the masses,, my gosh, if he has super strength, then my little johnny should have super strength too.. all the rest of the masses would feel inferior,, and thats not right,, either we all have it .. or none.. so if the rest of us cant have super powers,,, destroy the ones that do.

I think the superheroes would be compelled to band together in secrecy. They would split into 2 halves, good and evil. The evil ones would seek to obtain positions of political power. Seems like it already happened.

If such people had an ounce of smarts, they would NEVER go public; Human beings, being as fearful and vicious as we are(as a race) would do our best to kill them all. If they really want to help humanity, better to do it secretly; I've always been intrigued by the idea of groups of "talented" people banding together to do just that; my own experiences have taught me that psychics, telepaths, all manner of extraordinarily talented people exist; Why haven't they come together to pool their talents, and try to stop some of the evil in this world? I'm not talking about X-men type bull#, or some yahoo group where some fat guy in indiana waves around a plastic lightsaber, and calls himself a jedi; there are truly powerful healers, empaths, kineticists of all flavors, etc, walking this world. There needs to be a way to weed out the real from the fake, and a way to organize them to help humanity along, because, we damn sure need some help.

i don't feel that it would especially be the democrats, but more the republicans. they generally don't seem real open to change and such, and this would be a huge change for the entire world.

and i think it would be a great idea to form group like you mentioned, dragonseeker, with empaths and healers, that maybe bring about more peac and healling to our breaking world.
