Florida lawmakers debate offering a Christian license plate

Florida drivers can order more than 100 specialty license plates celebrating everything from manatees to the Miami Heat, but one now under consideration would be the first in the nation to explicitly promote a specific religion.

The Florida Legislature is considering a specialty plate with a design that includes a Christian cross, a stained-glass window and the words "I Believe."

The official end of the separation of church and state. Now that Florida is considering a Christian license plate, they're going to have to consider an atheist, muslim, jewish, satanist, pagan, and animist plate.

I don't know why people need customized licenses plates in the first place. Most states allow the front plate to be custom and only 1 legal plate in the back of the car.

Rep. Edward Bullard, the plate's sponsor, said people who "believe in their college or university" or "believe in their football team" already have license plates they can buy. The new design is a chance for others to put a tag on their cars with "something they believe in," he said.

People don't "believe" in schools or teams, they like/love. There's a huge difference. Most people don't worship the Dallas Cowboys, unlike Jesus.

Would Jesus actually want people putting him on their cars in the first place? I'm pretty sure that's called IDOL WORSHIP.

If the plate is approved, Florida would become the first state to have a license plate featuring a religious symbol that's not part of a college logo. Approval would almost certainly face a court challenge.

What a sad state of affairs this country has come to. We have a separation of church and state for a reason so this does not happen. Well no more, not in Florida anyway.

One could argue Bush's evangelical support and his statement of his beliefs completely disregard the separation of church and state as well. We've only had a few catholic Presidents in the first place, which is also interesting. No atheists, no jews, no muslims.

The problem with the state manufacturing the plate is that it "sends a message that Florida is essentially a Christian state" and, second, gives the "appearance that the state is endorsing a particular religious preference," said Howard Simon, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida.

Exactly! America is supposedly a "christian" nation, yet we invade foreign countries on a whim.

What a crock of guano.

I don't want to insult FL residents, but this state is an absolute scourge of unconstitutional gangsterism masquerading as stupidity. All these incidents, from the 2000 election debacle to wiping off 80,000 blacks from the voter roles by intentionally misID'ing them as felons in 2004 to "crime is terrorism" are flagrantly provocative and shamelessly calculated.

The reactionary neofascist elements are using this state as their proving ground for seeing just how far they can pervert and undermine the Constitution, the rule of law, and the rights of citizens.

These vanity license plates were instituted to make some money for the states, and now in FL it goes to this extreme--Christian plates. Absolutely no surprise. It's a small-bore issue, and most will shrug it off as a petty offense, not to be taken too seriously, but the sum total of all these transgressions creates a political and social mentality that is grotesquely distorted.

Where is the push-back by rational Floridians to this insidious perversion of government? It's become so bad that people joke about "Floriduh." Thing of it is though, this "stupidity" is Machiavellian.

Whats wrong with normal number plates. The rest of the world is starving, and florida is worried about having a religious number plate. People just buy a chain or ring or something.

Exactly what Andy has stated, why are we always wasting money on things such as this? Is it even important to have drivers be able to distinguish a Christian driver from one who might be atheist or Buddhist? I can see it now, when Christians get this license plate, other faiths will join in either protest or demand of having there own special plate just as well; but again in my opinion it's all a waste of money.
