Humans nearly wiped out 70,000 years ago, study says

The human population at that time was reduced to small isolated groups in Africa, apparently because of drought, according to an analysis released Thursday.

What's most interesting to me though is this part of the article,

"Previous studies using mitochondrial DNA -- which is passed down through mothers -- have traced modern humans to a single "mitochondrial Eve," who lived in Africa about 200,000 years ago."

They traced everything to a single woman with the right DNA? That's amazing, I don't see how it could be done though. They must have used a computer program to chart the DNA back to one highly likely hypothetical candidate, right?

Yea,it is truly amazing tech. we have to be able to do that.

It show also how adaptable we are to survive that(Im sure someone will come on here saying "aliens"saved us)

there was a special on PBS awhile back where they looked for "markers" that get passed down from one generation to the next. They ended up taking DNA samples accross the globe and figured out where the most likely original place was. I seem to remember them ending up in Mongolia for some reason; not Africa. I will see if I can come up with a link.
