BOOM! hell, who needs a small one when you can make a giant one, on earth? just fire those babies at the moon. who needs that thing anyway?

LOL Crabmeat!

Are we talking CERN or the MOON?

I don't know if we really need CERN. To be honest it scares the hell out of me. Perhaps it could shoot an antimatter stream at a 'target'. That would be interesting. Even cooler, open a temporary black hole in front of whatever and watch it get swallowed up. Now that would be fun - until we needed to close the thing again!

Oh well, perhaps Photon Torpedo's are the way to go. Seems to work for Picard!

as for the plasma torpedo, being contained in a magnetic field... it sounds good and all, but it's impractical. weapons are disposable devices. you shoot. it hits. boom. you shoot you miss. sucks. but you can't risk missing something that costs a crap load of money to create. accuracy would have to be 100%, ability of deflection by the target would have to be none, to make such an expensive weapon practical.

Well, one Sidewinder missile costs approximately $85,000 US dollars. So there are some pretty damn expensive weapons in use out there.

Just did a little research on something that I'd heard of recently; Scalar electromagnetics and weaponry. Kinda wish I hadn't...

I'm not entirely sure of the provenance of the reports that can be read on the internet, but if they're real, then it's typical of us to turn something that could benefit man into a truly deadly series of weapons.

"Scalar EM is the brainchild of Lt. Col. (retired) Thomas E. Bearden, a systems analyst and wargames specialist who has been advocating a view of electromagnetics which is based on the notion of a vast, unseen background of scalar energies (as opposed to vector energies) which underlie all physical reality.
If Bearden is correct in his Scalar EM theory, then we can build devices which would enable us to alter gravity, time, inertia, and the apparent mass of an object. This of course has ENORMOUS implications for military applications, space-vehicle drives, time-travel, teleportation, paranormal phenomena, and just about every other area one can think of

twm.co.nz...

These are truly terrifying weapons, and ones that negate any need for direct, line of sight attacks even on a planetary scale.

Remember, the power for these weapons comes from the time domain, longitudinal EM waves in the vacuum of empty space, and the power is tremendous and mind-boggling. Being able to blast away at any target from a distant control booth is something that has never happened before. This is incredible power to be in control of and it divides the history of weaponry into "before" and "after." And the destructive power of these weapons is delivered instantaneously to the target from the local vacuum at the place of the target.

Speaking of "Tesla Howitzers", Bearden explains that:

These interferometers are called "Tesla Howitzers." They can deliver a giant blast of energy to the distant target site, true "action-at-a-distance".
The howitzer can use a lesser exothermic power setting and simply destroy all electronics in the target area. Thus they can render our nuclear missiles inoperable as they sit in their silos by "frying" the electronic circuits that guide them. They can bring down any airplane, anywhere in the world, at any time. Any person anywhere, if their exact position is known, can be assassinated without a shot being fired.

They can even alter the weather:

By using both of these heat (exothermic) and cold (endothermic) modes together the weather can be altered anywhere. Warm the air over here, cool it down over there, put a curl in the jet stream, dissipate clouds, create clouds, whip up a tornado. Bearden speaks about using the endothermic howitzer mode as a weapon of war:
"Cold explosions can be used to freeze tanks, personnel, and equipment. The equipment and tanks thaw out. The personnel thaw out too, but they are dead when they do."

www.prahlad.org...

Bizarrely, I dreamt of a cold explosion several months ago. Huge, atomic cloud pilar but with freezing winds...

Sci-fi or no, these Tesla inspired weapons are way and beyond anything ever invented before, and showcase the lengths we will go to to, even in fiction, destroy our fellow man. What a shockingly awful prospect it is if they actualy exist...

That reminded me of the Tantalus Field from an episode of Star Trek. Wow, we're in trouble when people end up with weapons like that.

I remember reading about a crazy weapon the Americans had developed years ago.

It was a massive depleted Uranium slug dropped from on a target. These things were massive and weighed several tonnes. Depleted Uranium, being so dense won't burn up in the atmosphere and imparts a massive kinetic blast wave from hitting the ground.

It is basically a man-made meteor like what the soviets were supposedly working on during the Cold War, of course back then we were worried about a giant rock being dropped, not a superdense load of nuclear waste.

I'm sure there is stuff on the web about this type of thing.. which could very well be a reality as such an object would not fall under the No Weaponization Of Space treaties - Ridiculous.

A giant Rock traveling at 25 000 miles an hour would really be the perfect weapon. No one would know where it came from.

And then there is the issue of Plausible Deniability...

Doc, its called Rods from God. And it is now using missile shaped tungsten steel rods dropped from orbit. Areo-dynamic and burn-up resistant, enough at least, to allow re-entry speeds and airspeeds capable of decimating a target the size of a building and any bunker under it.. Without explosives.

Interesting thread.

I doubt that we are alone in this galaxy, and if that is the case, should we go 'out' there completely un-armed?
I dont think i would volunteer for a journey like that....

However i like simple ideas, like this one that WFA suggested

Additionally (using several systems together to maximize efficiency) waste material from the ship that would need to be 'dumped' anyway could be used as propellent/ammunition. A waste system could in theory be designed to process waste (both human and ship waste) into 'pellets' of propellent/ammunition, to be expelled through the engine/weapon.

Works almost like the idea behind "mass drivers"...

But anything that could propell a 'pellet' of any size with incredible speed would work as a good as any energy weapon if not better, and depending on how many of these that are mounted on the vessel, there could be a barrage of of 'pellets' protecting the ship and tearing apart any incomming misiles or eny vessels.

Missiles will probably also work, for delivering high explosives.
Energy weapons i believe is a bit difficult, for effectiveness there will be alot of demand on energy, and it will be limited by that.
