"End patriotic background music now"

I can almost see the flags waving

its a shame that over 50,000 Americans and no telling how many thousands of Vietnamese lost their lives in that 10 or so years.

Estimated list because, obviously, the true number will never be known.

North Vietnam:560,000.
China:2,446.

Civilian dead.
Vietnamese:2,000,000.
Cambodian:700,000.
Laotian:50,000.

US:58,209.(missing/wounded:307,000)
Allies/South Vietnam:250,000.
South Korea:4,900.
Australia:720.
New Zealand:87.

I found this from an American newspaper article.(dated 2003)

The US death toll in Iraq has surpassed the number of American soldiers killed during the first three years of the Vietnam War.

A Reuters analysis of US Defense Department statistics showed on Thursday that the Vietnam War, which the Army says officially began on Dec. 11, 1961, produced a combined 392 fatal casualties from 1962 through 1964, when American troop levels in Indochina stood at just over 17,000.
By comparison, a roadside bomb attack that killed a soldier in Baghdad on Wednesday brought to 397 the tally of American dead in Iraq, where US forces number about 130,000 troops + the same number reached in Vietnam by October 1965.

The casualty count for Iraq apparently surpassed the Vietnam figure last Sunday, when a US soldier killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack south of Baghdad became the conflict's 393rd American casualty since Operation Iraqi Freedom began on March 20.

Larger still is the number of American casualties from the broader US war on terrorism, which has produced 488 military deaths in Iraq, Afghanistan, the Philippines, Southwest Asia and other locations.
Statistics from battle zones outside Iraq show that 91 soldiers have died since Oct. 7, 2001, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, which US President George W. Bush launched against Afghanistan's former Taliban regime after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington killed 3,000 people.

The Bush administration has rejected comparisons between Iraq and Vietnam, which traumatized Americans a generation ago with a sad procession of military body bags and television footage of grim wartime cruelty.

Because US involvement in Vietnam increased gradually after the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, there is little consensus on when the war in Southeast Asia began.
Some date the war to the late 1950s. Others say it began on Aug. 5, 1964, when Lyndon Johnson announced air strikes against North Vietnam in retaliation for a reported torpedo attack on a US destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin.
However, the Army's start date for the Vietnam War has been set by its Center of Military History as Dec. 11, 1961, when two helicopter companies consisting of 32 aircraft and 400 soldiers arrived in the country, an Army public affairs specialist said.

"It was the first major assemblage of US combat power in Vietnam," explained Army historian Joe Webb.

Vietnam casualties, which amounted to 25 deaths from 1956 through 1961, climbed to 53 in 1962, 123 in 1963 and 216 in 1964, Pentagon statistics show.

The link below has up to date figures for the dead & wounded fighting in Iraq.

The misrepresentation of facts, by using false, uncorrborated ones, paints a pretty biased picture.

But wouldn't that just make them misinformed, not anti-America?

I know there is a lot of it going around at the moment, but its directed (for the most part) at your government.

Its a very human thing to lump everyone in together rather than giving clear direction of who you're talking about.

Example;someone who dislikes Muslim funamentalists will usually show disdain for all Muslims rather than the few,but that isn't what they really mean.

Plus, freedom of speech,no matter how incorrect the facts are, does not equal animosity against a whole nation of people!

Not when one knowlingly holds evidence of the facts, or does not know the facts himself, but uses a biased opinion of uncorrborated filth.

I do not hold anything against anyone who has a problem with the US gov, just do not misrepresent the facts, and expect people who actually know what they are talking about, to sit idly by.

Agree to disagree, I think you speak more along of the lines of the "exception", not the rule.

Well despite all its "military superiority", i am struggling to think of a war that the U.S has actually "won" since 1945?
Korea, Afghanistan,Iraq-all much better for America's meddling are they??
You couldn't even win against third world country Vietnam, could you?
The U.S is actually promoting terrorism against itself in the middle east-U.S troops are being killed every week by "terrorists" (actually its their own country so perhaps "freedom fighters" would be more accurate?).
I recall a story from the (i think?) first gulf war, where a sheep herder armed only with an ancient rifle took out a state of the art helicopter with one shot!
If you think you can anhillate any country you like, well, i'm not gonna wish you good luck with that, even sarcastically?
Just remember, the more you meddle, the more hate you create, the more you become the evil empire.
All empires fall and yours will be no exeption-i beleive the wheels are already in motion due to outright hatred of america's foreign policy.
But i guess you tend to reap what you sow, hey?

Its been a little bit since I posted on here(I have been busy in other affairs)But I am glad to see the conversations and debates have "gentled"a little bit,you all bring up great points. But I thought the amount of dead in the Iraq and Afghanistan war was over 4,000?

Also some are still arguing that the US is bogged down in the mid-east so they are not a "hyperpower",which is incorrect, you can not dictate a power by "small conflicts"such as the Iraq and Afghanistan "War on Terror".

What makes us a "hyperpower"s the fact that in ANY major conflict we have been victorious and that still no other major nation threatens us or has the want nor the capability to,plus our economic influence(still, even with oil prices).

But by all means lets all continue to "disect'this current hyperpower-the USA.

We were the most powerful, until Bush squandered our economy, credability and good will. Now we are just the bully with more firepower.

Power is the ability to make change. We are rapidly loosing our influence in the world. The ability to blow the world into ashes 100 times over is not power. Not unless what you want to do is change the world into an ash pile.
If it has the power to end life on the planet and nothing else, then what purpose does it serve?

If all you can do is stand there and wave your gun, then your gun is powerless.

When you fire your gun the bullet has power. When you wave your gun, it may have power, based upon influence, not the power of the bullets.

If you can influence your advisary to not attack then your gun had power.
If your advisary is willing to perform a suicide attack, then the gun has no influence, no power.

But I thought the amount of dead in the Iraq and Afghanistan war was over 4,000?

Over 4000 is the death toll of allied soldiers in Iraq alone.I'm not sure how many have died in Afghanistan.
The civilian death toll for Iraq varies between 90,000 and over 600,000,depends who you believe.Either way,its an unacceptable (and tragic) amount when you consider that this invasion of Iraq was to free the people not slaughter them!

I have 2 friends out in Iraq and recently recieved a letter off one of them.It seems that the powers that be have passed an order that forbids all military personel from telling friends or family just how many soldiers/civilians have been killed or wounded. The order came from a US general but whether it applies to all soldiers or just the Americans i don't know.

All i can say is,from what i've been told from people who are actually there,Iraq is going to hell in a hand basket.Troops are running out of supplies, they have faulty equipment, they don't know who the real enemy is,too many leaders giving different orders to the same squads, etc etc.

Its a sorry state of affairs;probably more so if you think of this new order that has been given.

What makes us a "hyperpower"s the fact that in ANY major conflict we have been victorious and that still no other major nation threatens us or has the want nor the capability to,plus our economic influence(still, even with oil prices).

Have you not noticed that Iran has only been showing a display of defiance because of Americas attitude?
Before the US politicians started shooting their mouths off Iran had no care for America or Iraq. But now,Iran is being backed into a corner and has been forced to make a responce.

If 9/11 was the start of a war by Islamic fundamentalists don't you think they would have a back up plan?
If you can pull off something as big as 9/11 then you're gonna have something just as dramatic and damaging set in place in other western countries. But these fundamentalists don't.Apart from a few relatively small attacks there has been nothing of true substance. And isn't it strange how the US had suffered no more attacks.
You would also expect these countries to be prepared for Americas reaction to 9/11,you would expect them to be armed to the teeth, but they aint and that just doesn't add up!

And,as i showed in an earlier thread, you have never been victorious in a war own your own.Battles from the 2 world wars maybe, but never a war.
This makes all the difference in how people see your military might.

Many countries have the capability to take you out.
How?
Attack the head and the body dies.
If your government can be got to,and you are left without any leaders, then you are as good as defeated.
Its very simple and highly effective.

The American public also need to know that Iran is not like Iraq,it is a country that is making changes in its own time and on its own terms. It may not be a perfect place and it has laws and attitudes we oppose, but the fact that they are learning, that they are willing to change, shows that they are not the "...backward,lawless,fundamentalists prone to terrorism..." people the US government likes to paint them as.I would say Iran is similar to how America and Britain were up to the Victorian era.

It would appear that certain people here still wish to believe the lies that they are told without making any effort to research other nations, their peoples or military capabilities.

Americas power projection hinges on the number of carriers it can deploy and a lot of good will from others. It needs and depends on friendly nations for RnR, fly overs etc. Should this be denied then it makes the job all the harder as American forces are actually shrinking due to the high costs in fielding such forces. At the same time other nations are building their armed forces up.

Americas greatest period was probally the 80-90's since then corrupt Goverments has sold the country and its people down the river. What most Americans do not realise is that for its economy to survive the US needs to wage war in the oil rich states as its own supplies are dwindling and it relies heavily of imports.

Should a war with Iran ensue and its nothing to do with nuke power or capability its about the oil supplies Irans primary objective is to block the straits of Hormuz. Once this is done and it is blocked for any length of time you will see petrol at $20 plus a gallon in the states, spiralling unemployment, food rationing and all the rest of it. Its strange how experts and lay people alike can see all this and have models to show this happening but most Americans seem blissfully unaware and some seem to think they can fight their way out of anything.

All military forces require massive amounts of fuel, one begs the question if there is oil rationing where will the oil be found to prosecute several wars at once. Americas economy is in a fragile state as it is and further conflicts especially any that widen will certainly see the country topling over the edge. This scenario is borne out by the fact that all the recent draconian legislation is not directed at potential terrorists but to control a rioting populace faced with more war, unemployment, a worthless currency, food shoratges, and no fuel.

Again the proof of this is the fact that since the stae backed terrorist attack of 9/11 not one other attack has taken place on the mainland USA. This begs the question why the need for all the tough new laws. Well its simply when the people are starving the first people they attack are the ones in charge.

First off TC, you have lost already in thinking wars are "won."

Second yes America could probably destroy Iran in one week, but you know they would stay there for years.

I recently watched a program on the 'History Channel' called:"Dogfights of he Future"

I bring this up as I think everyone who thinks that the US(specifically it's Air Force)is weak should watch this for a totally unbiased simulation of our capabilities now up to the year 2030.

I think you will then, after seeing this you will begin to concur with what others and myself have been trying to tell you all.

Also let me post this "tid bit"of information to all (British especially)on here who say the US is the only country to force weaker nations to abide to it's will for its own gain.

Sorry to move away from the OP but don't drag my countrys' already crappy name through the mud just to validate America's actions today.

So we destroyed Zanzibar in 1898 I forget sometimes we destroyed so many places fighting for the 'man'. There was some recompense 'We were the most Powerful nation on earth' cold comfort for those who fought and died so they could feed there families, while the 'man' took the profit *YAWN. Same crap different date so leave the Brits out of it, we fight in your wars don't we, so give us some slack.

The US can invade whatever country it likes jkrog08 – we all know this. But true ‘power is when we have every justification to kill, and we don’t’. The Human race is (should be) smarter than this.

The fact that the US has absolutely NO justification to kill, only goes to serve my point that, when all is said and done, your country will be known as a corrupt policeman – a policeman that knows no boundaries. This is not ‘power’ or ‘powerful’ – this is negligence and incompetence at your so-called role as the World’s ‘’policeman’’.

The sooner this ‘Global Policeman’ is made redundant, the better off us decent ‘civilians’ will be.

Naïve statement by your good self with regards ‘power’!
