Hi Guys,
I need your help. I just saw a strange thing I cannot explain.
I went outside for a cig and looked up in the sky as I always do and saw a star moving slowly. It was way to slow for a satelite (and much brighter Almost as bright as the 'pointers' to the Southern Cross) or plane.
It was in the general direction of the Southern Cross heading downwards.
for locals I am in Brisbane Aust at around 9:15 local time.
Did anyone else see this or can anyone offer suggestions?

Thanks, but I have ALOT of satelites passing. including the ISS. This was alot larger and slower. It took a good few minutes to clear the sky. thats why I am perplexed.

OK just dealing with the obvious first

Was it moving in a single direction?
Was it moving at a constant speed or did it speed up/down?
How large was it?
Estimate the altitude if you can (higher than cirrus clouds for example?)

I must agree, this sounds to me like a satellite. It's speed and brightness will depend upon it's orbit. When i'm at my telescope I see many in one night, ranging from quite bright ones moving slowly, to faint ones and geoestationary ones.

Hi OP... I wonder if this is the one you are refering to... I took this pic some days ago. Interesting what you can find with a cheap camera and some enhancing in photoshop.

We should all start taking pictures; we`ll find something interesting for shure!

Hi Vikingant. According to the Heaven's Above site the ISS was not visible from your area last night. I have, however, found quite a few objects of significant magnitude that may (or may not) explain your sighting. This page is set for Brisbane.

Hope this helps.

LOL! ... just a cheap 4 megapixel camera and a improvised tripode (not even close to that) ... so much for "equipment"... LOL

I have other pics that I took, and are pretty much interesting and rare (!), with the same "setup" LOL! i`ll be more than happy to post them if you guys are interested...

What I found, is that you can take really cool pictures of "moving stars" at night, with just the right camera setting, that will make the difference.

Now, it would be nice, if any of you recognize that "sat" that I took the pic of.

Regards!

Was it moving in a single direction?
yes. downards
Was it moving at a constant speed or did it speed up/down?
It was constant
How large was it?
it appeared the size and brightness of sirius or venus
Estimate the altitude if you can (higher than cirrus clouds for example?)
Higher than cloud level

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a sat. I've seen quite a few and it wasn't anyting like i have sen before. Could be wrong tho

To the OP, I saw somthing similar to this about 2 months ago, talked about it on here and no one even seemed to notice I had written anything.
What I saw happened in the same way except my slowmoving star moved really fast...I went out about 11:30pm to have a cig in my front yard, looked up to look at the stars as usual, and I saw a bright and out of place star (at least I thought it was a star) then after looking at the starlike thing for about 10-15 seconds it just took off at great speed and was gone from sight in almost a blink of an eye.
Tell me THIS was a satellite.

Thank you. I was starting to think I had lost it. This thing was moving in a distinctly downwaerd direction. Satelites tends 'cross' the sky.
I cannot say it took off as such as I looked down to feed the possums that were nawing at my feet, but I when I looked for it again following the line it was on I couldn't see it again. Based on the speed and direction I thought I would have seen it again

I've been watching the ISS over the past week, it looks like a moving star.
Maybe, that might help.

This sounds very similar to something a friend and I witnessed at his home back in 1999. We were talking in his driveway and happened to notice a light moving northward, very slowly across the sky. Every few minutes the light would speed up and when it did, it dimmed a bit. We watched the light for about 20 minutes when it suddenly changed direction toward the south-west. When the light changed direction, it made a very quick zig-zag pattern. After another 10 to 15 minutes of watching the light, it eventually went out of sight. Neither he or I have seen anything like it since.

moving star ay!?
i experienced an event like this.
what you saw was most likely a stationary(very big) object in space (stationary relative to earth's rotation). satellites rotate with the earth so they should not look mobile from your perspective. The object should not reflect any light if it was a satellite, first because satellites arent good mirrors and second, satellites would look incredibly small to naked eye.

Hey there buddy, you are not losing it at all. I have seen this before too. In fact, my girlfriend and I went out to a dark ridge above town and away from the light pollution and were on the express mission to flag down UFO's with a flashlight when we noticed the same thing. An object that initially looked like a star begun to move in a zig-zag pattern when we flashed at it (it was above a tree that worked as a sort of reference point). This thing began to move towards us as we shined a light at it and actually began flashing back similar patterns as we were. It never got super close, almost like it figured out what we were. So needless to say my gf and I know what you are talking about.
.......The adventures continue.........
Two weekends ago my gf's friend came to visit us and we asked her if she wanted to go see a UFO (hoping we would get lucky and see it again). We went out to a different spot but still out of town a wee bit and saw the same exact thing. This star was zig-zagging and flashing at us and moving all over. So my gf's friend was shocked and now she "knows what she saw" too.
The craziest thing about all of this though is someone in the city or not actually looking for a "moving star" would not notice anything out of the ordinary.

Thanks for your input guys.
When I first wrote this I thought I would get everything from Planes to Sats to UFOs. I got the lot. For those who have read any of my posts you would know I don’t usually buy into the UFO situation, as much as I would like to think they are there.
I have been thinking and for the sake of my sanity I have decided I will have to put this one down to a combination of the ISS and optical illusion even though I know what I saw was not a sat as I have seen in the past.

Hi Kakhama. I think perhaps you should do a little research before you state info like that on here, because you couldn't be further from the truth. Although you are correct that some satellites appear stationary as they orbit "with the earth", most do in fact orbit, and can easily be seen crossing across the sky on a clear night. Any many are VERY reflective.

starting in January 2009, I began to notice that the stars looked brighter and there was more of them than there usually is. I then started noticing that the brighter stars were moving in a way that I had never seen. It was like they were swimming through the night sky like a jellyfish. Once I saw them moving,I became almost obsessed with watching them. I would lay out and watch them for hours every night. Then I realized that EVERY star is moving! It's just easier to track the brighter ones, but they are all moving the same weird way. I watched continously, trying to find a pattern in the directions they were moving in, but couldn't. I am a big believer in God and try to read some of the bible every day, so when I saw this, it immediately reminded me af Acts 2:19 when God is speaking of the time of judgement and He says"AND I WILL GRANT WONDERS IN THE SKY ABOVE AND SIGNS ON THE EARTH BELOW, BLOOD, AND FIRE, AND VAPOR OF SMOKE"(New American Standard Bible). Also, the book of Enoch (which isn't in the bible, but should be) could explain what's going on as well. Enoch was Noah's great-grandfather. In Genseis 5:21-24 it says this about Enoch:'21Enoch lived sixty-five years, and became the father of Methuselah. 22Then Enoch walked with God three hundred years after he became the father of Methuselah, and he had other sons and daughters. 23So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.' In his book Enoch says that while he walked with God, he was shown and explained by the angels all the secrets of heaven and sheol (the abyss, hell). I can't go into the whole book of Enoch here, but if you are interested in reading it for yourself you can read it free at www.sacred-texts.com/bib/boe. I personally believe that a person needs to read AND UNDERSTAND the book of Enoch before he/she can even begin to grasp how things work and God's plan for us.
We are going to focus on the stars here though. Now according to Enoch, stars come forth to earth through portals in heaven. Each individual star by itself, according to their number and their names, their courses and their positions, and their times and their months. Through each of these small portals pass the stars of heaven and run their course to the west on the path which is shown to them and God has appointed. And he calls on them by their name and they hearken unto Him. Each is weighed in a righteous balance according to their proportions of light. And Enoch asked the angel what this mystery was and the angel told him that the stars are the holy who dwelt upon the earth and believe in the name of the Lord of Spirits for ever and ever. It also says that He appoints a judge for each of them so none will hinder. So, basically they have a little bubble that they have to stay in and follow their appointed paths, but they can move all around in that bubble. Now, knowing that stars are the righteous that have been here on earth and worship the Lord day and night, another verse comes to mind that might make sense of things: Revelation 6:9-11 says: 9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow bondsmen and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been. Could it be that the stars moving in the sky is a sign that the souls have awakened and are asking when it will be time? Just a few thoughts to ponder on. Sorry it was so long, but it's hard to speak of a complex subject as this one in only 4000 words. I hope at least someone gains some knowlege from this. Thank you for your time.
