I have a niece and nephew who are 2 and 8. In order to encourage
them to eat their veggies their parents slathered ranch dressing on them.

Now I normally wouldn't have a problem with this if it was raw
veggies or even periodically, however, it's gotten to the point
where they have to eat in on practically everything like cooked
green beans for one.

Just recently the little one overheard poppa say the word ranch
and he went into a chant of wanch wanch wanch and would not
eat until he got some. They let him pour it on his potatoes, ham
and corn casserole!!! I'm sorry but I think this is just plain wrong
and they are encouraging poor eating habits. Might as well
coat everything in chocolate while their at it too!!

Am I wrong in my thinking???

lol no you're not wrong for thinking this way but sometimes you just have to go with them. they're kids

when i was little i would barely eat anything. i would just have chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese and pizza

at least they're eating a wider variety of foods, even if they have to put ranch on it

i'm sure this is something they will grow out of

funny though

I know sometimes you just have to give in. I'm guilty of slipping
or bribing them the extar pieces of candy at times.

I HOPE they'll grow out of it!! Not that I won't love them if they
become roly poly adults but I'd rather they get a start now at
being trim and healthy.

I think the adults need to use their noggin more though. Outta sight
outta mind. If it's not on the table then it may not even cross their
minds that they want it. Besides, what ever happened to ketchup!
That's a good alternative and never hurt me none!! lol

Ugh I hear ya SuprDupr. Luckily my own kids were very adventurous and always ate, or at least tried anything we gave them. But I have two little ones in daycare that will turn their noses up at anything that doesn't look like cereal, tacos, pizza or PB & J.

Their mom perpetuates this by only giving them these foods at home and tells me she doesn't want to implement the "eat it or starve" rules because she's worried about their health.....yyyyyyeaaaahhhh and cereal and tacos everyday must just be doing WONDERS for them!

We're now faced with a 3 and 6 year old that actually gag and have even thrown up just looking at a good home cooked meal!! Anything with meat (other than tacos) sends them into a crying jag. Any kind of veggies starts the gagging throwin up reflex. It's totally ridiculous, and has me at my wits end.

I have 8 kids in my home eating meals and snacks, and unfortunately, I can't and won't give in to their nonsense. Otherwise I'd have 8 kids all throwing tantrums until they got their favorite foods.

I just don't understand why so many parents cause such stress to themselves. If you don't give in to this from day one, they never learn that behaviour. Giving in only perpetuates it and makes things harder for the parent themselves in the long run

Well put Michelle!! That's sad if they are seriously gagging and
throwing up just at the though of a different type of food.

Maybe you should try putting tranch dressing on it! lmao

Eight kids under one roof, wow! You are right about the
tantrums, that would drive you insane if you gave in!

Parents give in to easily nowadays. When I was growing up, we were not excused from the table until we had finished what was on our plates.

If we didn't finish what was on our plates, the next step was to get sent to your room. We didn't have televisions, radio's or games to play in there either! It was truelly a punishment to have to go to your room!

Parents just can't cope with whiny kids anymore. The least bit of resistance from a child and the parents give in!

Come to think of it you are right. We had to sit at the table and
finish our meal too. If it came to the point where we absolutely
would not eat it (after sitting there for quite some time) we were
excused to our rooms and didn't get anything else to eat.

And you are right, it was a punishment to be sent to your room back in the day without all the "toys".

LMAO,

Ok this so reminded me of my next door neighbours. Their one little girl is a total whirlwind. She barely stays still. I think she actually vibrates when she's talking to you. She hops from foot to foot, up and down and talks about a mile a minute. She does the "can I go out...how about now...now?....is it time yet....how about now...can i go now....how about now..." thing

So, as any normal parent would do, they....give her COFFEE and iced cappucinos!! YAY good plan! I'm waiting to see the nervous tics develop when she hasn't had her caffeine fix.

Actually, I do. I am blessed to have 4 kids including 1 set of twins.

When I said NO, I meant it, or they were sent to their rooms. As mentioned before, I did not allow my kids to have televisions, etc., in their rooms, either. I think it isolates kids, and does not promote a family bond to let kids have those things in their rooms.

I was a firm believer in kids understanding what NO meant, and time outs were my specialty!

speaking of ranch,
maybe they could just
in a bowl and spread it around there cooked green beans.
but that was a little harsh.
But in my opinion
is even better than ranch.

Yuck, that reply should go in the "what the grossest thing
you ever..." thread. lol

I love Ranch dressing, just when used appropriately or in moderation.
