It seems that alot of those contests are used to gather valid email addresses which can be either sold or used later to send spam.

I would only give a hotmail addres or similar disposable one. Putting your details on the net only serves to make you a target.

I woldn't be at all surprised.
I no longer vote in any polls; at the very least it is spyware/adware.
