For anybody who has watched the series (everything before GX), there are many symbols spread throughout the show (the most obvious one being the all-seeing eye). Even before Duel Monsters, Yami Yugi (the main character of the show), used to be an extremely dark character in Season 0 (the series that was never aired in America).

So, is the entire series nothing more than a harmless children's cartoon, or does it have some underlying subliminal messages that we are not aware of?

It's a kids cartoon and cardgame. that's it. yeah it has mystic symbols in it. Anything these days has some bit of mystical symbols these days. tehy are cool, they make people guess. Seriously. They are in comics, books, art, jewlry, architecture, computers games, movies, ect. They don't necessarily mean anything at all, they just have too look cool. Or they take from something that already does exist and make it mystical and mysteriouse.

Thank you for your well-construed opinion. Any other comments?

Well... you asked. IMO, anyone who actually watches the cartoon or plays with the cards should sign up for the military and give their life for this country. The key point here is to, for the good of humanity, give your life. Sign up the Poke'mon crowd while your at it...
