Open season for bandits: Central African Republic

BANGUI, 31 March 2008 (IRIN) - Known variously as coupeurs de routes (highwaymen), Zaraguina or simply bandits, criminal gangs who kill, kidnap for ransom, loot and set fire to homes now pose the greatest threat to civilians in the north of the Central African Republic (CAR).

Sub Saharan Africa has become a bizarre real life version of Mad Max, minus the cool car chases and muscle cars. Bandits and Marauders are terrorizing thousands of people, looting and pillaging, taking precious food and fuel that has become extremely expensive. As food and fuel prices continue to increase this kind of lawlessness will become far too often the norm in a world faced with overpopulation and energy deficit.

I agree with you, defintely over food prices, riots in mexico over increase in prices of maize and tacos, in Bangledesh over price rises in rice. As the poorer ger richer in places such as India, China and Brazil food production is going to have to be significantly increased in western countries instead of just relying on dwindling supplies abroad.

It's not helped by the planting of crops for ethanol and other bio-fuels instead of for rice, vegetables etc etc.

Africa seems doomed, one minute there's talk of progress then you look at what you have pointed out here, and the Congo ( Civil war taking 40,000 lives a month according to Channel 4 news in the UK) and Zimbabwae(Massive inflation and rigged elections) Guinea Bissau (the worlds first narco-state according to the UN.
