Study Links Middle-Age Belly Fat to Dementia

By Rob Stein
Washington Post Staff Writer

People who have big bellies in their 40s are much more likely to get Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia in their 70s, according to new research that links the middle-aged spread to a fading mind for the first time.
So does anyone on here know the best exercise guaranteed to burn away the spare tire? I have SOME belly fat that's been with me forever & I've spent a lot trying to get rid of it. Strange thing is I'm not fat. Its concentrated in the midsection. I'm not a beer drinker. For the life of me, I can't get rid of it.

HELP! I can already feel the madness setting in. I'm afraid I might flood ATS with my fat induced delusions also.

Oh, I don't know (regarding this new theory).

Used to be an older couple lived across the road from us. He was a Justice of the Peace. Very disciplined. Spent half an hour each morning and night exercising fairly vigorously. He was about 6' 2" and all muscle and bone. Been like that all his life, his wife said. Man of few words. Sharp mind. Never carried any fat.

We bumped into the wife a decade or so later. Very sad. Her husband had senile decay, she said. Sometimes he was lucid and at other times, alarming .. as when he undertook (in his 70's) to climb up the 60 to 70 foot tree in their back yard to lop off the top twenty feet or so. He'd come crashing down through the branches and required hospitalization. His wife was postponing the inevitable, she said. Didn't want to put him in a nursing home, but he was becoming too much for her to handle.

Another elderly lady we knew had been fairly fat-free her entire life. Ate healthily, kept active and fit. But in her late 70's her mind began to go and within a year or so her family put her in a nursing home for her own safety.

These theories seem to come and go, don't they ? For example, a year or so ago, the experts were claiming that altzheimers was caused by the massive amounts of information people were required to process (largely unawares) .. sensory input from billboards, tv and other advertising, for example. Can't remember the exact number of advertisements it was claimed people were exposed to each day, but it was in the thousands.

Senility isn't new, although some of the words to describe it are. But all through history, a percentage of older people have lost their ability to process things in the normal way and have been described as senile, to varying degrees. Others make it to the end with their minds as clear as a bell. There's most likely a genetic element involved, as well as toxins in the environment and food, water, air, etc.

Typical of the experts to place the blame on the victims.

Didn't the adage use to be 'Fair, fat and forty ' ? And what about the famous 'middle-age spread' ? Putting on a bit of weight in middle age is reasonably 'normal' and not everyone who's done so has ended up becoming senile.

So, it's a theory. Another one. Guess next week there will be another.

Nothing wrong with working to eliminate excess weight however. But everything in moderation.

Just occurred to me ... do vegans and vegetarians evade senile decay ?

Walk. Increase time/length/speed gradually. You should be tired in the end but not exhausted. Add what Mr Ree suggested, also gradually.
Less TV!!!!!!! More walking.....
If money is not an issue a good Diet specialist is a great option.

Exercise is the number one thing you should do and adjusting your diet is the second thing.

Avoid foods with high carbs (like pasta and breads) after 2pm or 3pm and try to eat lean meats or white meats with vegetables for dinner. Drink plenty of water to, it helps cleanse the body and helps eliminate over eating. I saw a dietician for this advice so hopefully it helps

It is obvious that belly fat causes dementia. Have you not seen the hip huggers and skin tight, lycra shirts that girls wear nowadays? They MUST have dementia if they believe that seeing their love handles jiggle as they walk by is a "good look".

Don't get me wrong. My name is "bigFATfurrytexan". And i prefer seeing a little more meat on someone (being too skinny looks painful). But good lord, shouldn't you at least not wear skin tight, thin shirts when you have a "dunlap" on your belly?

Sorry if this seems like an aside...it certainly strays from my normal posting.

LOL ! But don't forget to include those roly-poly guys and all that 'too much information' spread of their backsides every time they move .. not to mention their 'retreated from sight' family-jewels

Yes, that is *most* likely due to the recent addition of artificially hydrogenated oils put into just about everything today. Check the labels, and you will find it in the most unsuspecting places.

Hydrogenated oils save the food industry a lot of money by having a cheap replacement for expensive (not really) butter in foods. These are oil molecules with additional hydrogen atoms artificially added to large carbon based chains (think oil and fat substitues).

It makes the food industry more profitable, but here's the problem; Your digestive system efficiently stores it, but the human digestive system has not evolved to break it down into energy. It doesn't know what to do with it. It's basicly plastisized tissue which will not go away. After years it will eventually break down into more digestible compounds, but it will take a long time. So don't eat any more of that crap and have some patience.
