DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A mother and her four children found dead in their Iowa City home were beaten to death, apparently by the father, authorities said Wednesday after autopsy results were released.

Stories like this make you wonder why the guy embezzled the money in the first place. Seeing as how he was a VP and bank controller, I wonder if he saw this bank collapse coming and decided to try and secure some cash for his family. It is sad that he committed this brutality on his own family. It is very wierd that he pleaded not guilty but then turned psycho on his loved ones. What makes someone do that?
you would think he would at least try and get some kind of plea. He was out on bail in the first place. It's not like he was locked up all this time. If that was the case, I could see hi going crazy in jail and maybe killing himself before he was found guilty.

Yeah it does. Pretty strange though how his body was found in a car crash.
Sad for any survivors of this family. they must have taken prints from the bat. That is just SOP for evidence techs.

In a way it reminded me of the murder of "gods banker" in the 80s.

That is crazy stuff. I guess it will be interesting to see if anything comes of this in the future. Things like this are probably covered up more often than we know. When I initially read the OP article, I just got a funny feeling about it. Just seems odd that this guy would off his entire family over an embezzlement charge. It's not like he stole millions of dollars. He could have even coped a plea deal. The more I think about this, the more I get suspicious. Especially in light of all of the bank troubles happening right now.

Exactly. I have been trying to look up a bit more on this bank. I have not been able to find much in regards to anything else out of the ordinary. Mostly I have found that people say they are a very family oriented organization and have always cared about the families in the communities they have served. Here is there media statement about the situation:

HILLS - This is a sad and tragic day for the family of Sheryl and Steve Sueppel and all who know and care about them. On behalf of the bank we want to express our heartfelt sadness for the events that occurred earlier today. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they grieve the loss of their family members.

Pretty generic if you ask me. Here is also a comment about the bank from an Iraq war vet.

It's funny that you think Hills Bank is the best. I happen to be an Iraq Vet. When I returned i had two interviews with them and they left a message on my answering machine stating that since i could not work one weekend out of the month due to military obligations and that the position was given to someone else. (THOSE WERE THE EXACT WORDS) They are vet haters in my book.

That is exactly why this is fishy. If he didn't steal it, why would he have done this? Just because he was embarrassed about being accused? That doesn't make sense. There is something deeper to this than we are being told.

Yeah. Serious business when the kids are involved. Doesn't it just seem a bit too extreme to do all of this for only half a million. Especially over a period of seven years. The guy was the VP. I am sure he had an enormous salary. I am just having a great deal of difficulty getting over the fact that this guy would do such a horrible thing over such a small amount of money. There are so many more scandals that involve multiple millions of dollars. It just doesn't add up.
Oh yeah, the autopsy results seem to have come a bit quick as well. I do work for the ME's office in my county, and this is one of the quickest turnarounds I have ever heard of.
If this guy was such a big "family values" kind of guy as people claim this bank and their employees are, how could he muster up the guts to actually beat his kids to death? After he already tried to poison them with carbon monoxide?
This quote from the article i also find disturbing:

"It becomes kind of a moot point whether it was actually a ball bat or some other item," Sgt. Troy Kelsay said. "We're confident we know what happened, and we're not going to talk any more specifics."

Why can we not talk more specific details. There should be a lot of questions and answers when it comes to a situation of this type.
