BBC website 'unblocked in China

The Communist authorities often block news sites such as the BBC in a policy dubbed the "great firewall of China".

But BBC staff working in China now say they are able to access news stories that would have been blocked before.

Well well! How long will the BBC website stay open for and really how much does it mean for the flow of information in China?

Is this the start of a shift in foreign policy?

There are lots of other comments and plenty of people confirming that the whole site is accessible.

Has the BBC done some kind of a deal, allowing them greater access to Greater China?

Or did someone in China's internet control office press the wrong button?

Personally I hope that this is yet another step in the right direction for China. The more they open up the better it will be for the people of China , the people of Tibet and oppressed people all over the planet.

I live in a Socialist, or to most 'westerners', Communist country, and I rarely have a problem accessing international news websites. There has been times in the past, when particularly negative comments were made about the Vietnamese government, the page became unavailable.

You are naive if you think that censorship doesn't happen in Western Countries. Or maybe the spin on it is 'under-reported'.

China does have internal problems with civil unrest, mostly concerning the cost of living and economic inequality. These are global problems.

Of course this happens in the west. How many stories break! and then get swept under the rug, not talked about or just flat out killed.

As for China having problems, sure. It's a big, relatively modern society (in the cities) and has all, and probably then some, of the problems that most Americans or European city dwellers have.

I'm still hopeful that this is a good move forward, that opening foreign media sources will be a positive thing for the people of China.

Could be a good sign, I hope it is.

Freedom can behave like a fire at times, its not the 'at rest' state of fuel/oxygen/heat, so it takes working on, but once it gets going it can jump its intended fire pit and set ablaze unitended areas.

I hope this is one of those times.

There are 2 teams forming across the globe, one of fear/tyranny/hate, and the other of hope/liberty/love. Even in communist countries the self evident truths of freedom become apearent to its citizens at times when the haze lifts!

I see that the British foreign minister has said that mass boycotting the Olympic games will not be doing anyone any good!

See someone has a bit of common sense.
