No, no, no. The FBI wants evidence that will hold up in court. They can't get it that way.

Free speech is not a crime. Why are almost all comments here along the lines of "FBI=bad!!!". Groupthink, yuck.

My point is, watch them set up anti-Government websites as fake child pornography sources and convict you of being a pedophile while also quelling your freedom of speech.

Once you give them an inch, they'll take a mile.

Pfft. I'd like to see them prove that in court!

Oh. And another thing. There's no such thing as a "secure" wireless connection, just less vulnerable ones. Anyone with a wireless network at home is susceptible to having somebody access their network and use it for surfing for illegitimate material of all kinds.

Furthermore, somebody could use a trojan virus to take over other people's computers, using that victim as a human shield.

Somebody else said it best... an IP is not an ID.

I'm all for catching the predators, but only in ways that are fair to everyone else. There's a reason you aren't allowed to fish with dynamite. Let's apply the same common sense to people, shall we?

If cyberstings are NOT used, I'm afraid there's no realistic way to catch these people.

That's exactly the way they're trying to get it, by going after people who click on links. That gets "probable cause," which they use to get a warrant to search your computer and your house - AT YOUR EXPENSE. They use that search to try and find the court evidence. They don't know the evidence is there until they've already done the search, see? The problem is in the very beginning of the process: If you watched the video I posted, you know that links can be deceiving.

How is it any different than what this article says? Do you think they're going to hand over the HTML code to the judge and jury to determine what the alt and title text was of the hyperlink?

No. They're going to say "so and so went to one of our child porn websites" and that's the end for you. You're thrown in a database, unable to get a job for the rest of your life, unable to apply for an apartment or a loan for the rest of your life, and probably wearing some GPS tracker, limited to where you can live, constantly reporting your movements and activities to police, having Big Brother look over you 24/7 all because you were lonely one Friday Night and decided to use Google as a substitute for a 'friend' and accidentally clicked on a link that gave you a pop-up that contained a re-direct to an FBI child pornography sting operation website.

So now your life is ruined because you didn't feel like buying a pop-up blocker.

That's fair?

Politicians and priests get off with a slap on the wrist for RAPING AND ABUSING children in REAL LIFE, but how dare we not have a pop-up blocker stopping us from self-incrimination for a non-crime that we didn't commit.

Garbage. Pure garbage.

Yak, yak, yak. If the defendant has half a brain he or she will ask the FBI to really flesh out the case and the FBI will have to do they if they want to win.

So it doesn't matter if we catch guilty people or innocent people, as long as we catch people? That's basically what you're saying, since you're ignoring the MANY ways that somebody's computer could be sent to these links without their intent to go there.

You want to get these pedos off the street? Stop giving them second chances, you'll accomplish twice as much without destroying the intent of the Constitution.

Actually...

It kind of makes you wonder who is more twisted... the pervs that are surfing for child porn, or the sick freaks who get their rocks off pretending to offer it to the pervs. And yes I think anyone is a sick freak who would pretend to offer child porn just to catch someone that's looking for it. It's voyeuristic, evil and cruel.

It's like offering a box of delicious krispy kreme doughnuts to a morbidly obese person just so you can get your kicks watching to see if they'll chow down or not.

I have no problem with legitimately catching and punishing sick people, but when it's you that is offering the object of the sickness, just so you can catch the sicko... that makes you even more twisted than they are.

It is not evil. It's completely misguided to have any sympathy for pedophiles.

Yeah yeah, keep up your flag waving. I'm sure you're doing them proud.

Nobody's being sympathetic to the pedophiles. Unlike you, we're just concerned about all the people who have nothing to do with it who are going to get caught in the cross-fire.

In case you were too busy being obtuse to catch the obvious problem with this whole scheme, let me make it a bit clearer for you:

CLICKING LINK = FBI SEARCH = RIGHTS INFRINGED UPON, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THEY FIND ANYTHING, THEY STILL WENT THROUGH YOUR PROPERTY WITHOUT ANY REAL PROBABLE CAUSE.

Again....

REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THEY FIND ANYTHING, THEY STILL WENT THROUGH YOUR PROPERTY WITHOUT ANY REAL PROBABLE CAUSE.

Do you have a wife, by any chance? Do you think you would still have a wife if the FBI seized your computer in a child porn investigation? How about your job, do you think you'd still have it if you called up and said, "Hey, I can't come into work today, I'm being interrogated about my attempts to download a video of a four year old being raped but I swear I didn't do it!"

When it comes to child porn, there are two huge problems. The first is the victimized children, the second is the fact that ten minutes of falsely being associated with it will ruin your life because the world is packed with illogical fools who are just find with wrecking a dozen innocent lives to bring one possible offender to trial.

Im glad they are trying to stop this stuff but I agree what if a spamer hacker ect gets into it and decides to spam it out If I remember right if you dont have good softwear that ads can just pop up and you have to click to get rid of them what if that happens ??? just curious

In that case, the FBI wouldn't have sufficient evidence to convict you. There's nothing to worry about.

I have sympathy for anyone that is deliberately set up for destruction, I don't care if it's a pedophile, a priest, a mechanic, a bread maker, a murderer or a rapist, or an ATS member.

As I said, sick people deserve to be punished and straightened the hell out if possible. But no one deserves to be deliberately, purposely set up for damnation and that is basically what this is.

As for hotlinks I never click any hotlink I do not right click first. Go to properties and get the URL you will be taken to.

I have never done this in all my years using computers. Furthermore, what about people even less tech savvy as me? As the internet proliferates more each day, there are going to be plenty of people out there who have no idea what they're doing.

As for the other issue of telling who clicked the link. I would presume that they would investigate this much like in the article to see what other web sites had been visited or images downloaded.

Are you suggesting that just because someone may have visited websites with "morally questionable" material, that shows that they are a pedophile?

I might understand if there was illegal pornography on the computer, but they wouldn't know that until after they busted down your door. If they had known about the other material, they wouldn't need to use this method.

If they were monitoring traffic to a real illegal site, and nailed anyone who actually downloaded material I would be more inclined to accept that they had probable cause to investigate. But even with this, there is a slippery slope with regards to some of the other points I have mentioned.

After all I know I have an alibi on my whereabouts, if I am at home and want to lie about that I would need a reliable alibi.

What if you are home asleep in bed, but your buddy is staying on the couch and decides to use your computer in the middle of the night. I know I have gone to bed leaving a friend or two in my living room still playing video games or whatever. What sort of alibi would you have then?

Or what if you go out for a drive to no place special, and while you are out, your roomate is on the computer. Try to prove where you were.

Not having an alibi is not proof of guilt, only proof of innocence (in most cases).

Getting an email from someone you do not know with a link in it and clicking it is pretty much asking for trouble though.

I click on links in emails all the time. And you know what? I don't even own my own computer. So what does that tell you? Besides, if the link didn't accurately state the intended content, how does that prove intent?

If you are getting emails with links to child porn you need to be busted.

I really hop you are kidding. With that logic, if they sent you the link in an email, you should be busted then, even if you don't click it. Come on. :shk:

If you have friends who would send this to you then one you need better friends, and two you could prove that it was sent to you by a friend through the HD of your PC.

Aparrently it wouldn't matter who sent it to you. I should hope people would have better friends, but I know many people that I would not associate with socially. Furthermore, there are plenty of people I talk to in the internet, that I know nothing about.

Maybe it is my lack of trust of others that keeps me from clicking anything I am not already familiar with without checking the links properties first.

Well, whatever works for you I suppose, but that doesn't mean you should become a sex offender and go to prison just because you forget to check before you clicked.

In the world today with ID theft and such, it is irresponsible not to do that.

I don't store any personal information on the computer, so I have nothing to worry about.

Any one going to places that hold these links are probably being watched to start with.

Just because people go to adult sites, does not make them a criminal or a pedophile.
